Received a Notice CP53E from the IRS? Here’s what it means:
The IRS was not able to process your direct deposit, so your refund will be issued another way. Direct deposit is typically faster, although you need to act quickly - within 30 days from the letter date - to adjust banking information. After 30 days with no action, your refund will default to a paper check. But either way, your refund is still on the way.
You can:
• Add/update banking info through your ID.me account for direct deposit
• Do nothing after 30 days, which will default to a paper check, which can take more time

If more time is needed, we can file you an extension - giving you until October 15 to file.

Remember that a tax extension gives you more time to file, but any taxes owed are still due by the original filing deadline of April 15. To help reduce penalties and interest, we recommend paying as much as you can by April 15.
