Did you buy a new car in 2025? If it was built in the U.S., you can now deduct up to $10,000 in car loan interest from your federal taxes.

You can take this deduction even if you take the Standard Deduction. It directly lowers your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which can help you qualify for other tax credits (like the Child Tax Credit) that are income-dependent.

The "American" Digits: If your VIN starts with a 1, 4, 5, or 7, your car was assembled in the United States.

The deduction phases out if you make over $100k (Single) or $200k (Married). You don't need a business! This is for your personal use - your family SUV, or your personal truck.

Some provisions apply broadly, whether you itemize or not. But the biggest shifts still happen where itemized deductions come into play.

Maryland refunds are taking a little longer than usual this year. Here is an update from the Comptroller of Maryland.

In the past few days, we have made significant progress on processing Tax Year 2023 returns. As of 2/21, we have processed 382,983 returns and sent approximately 209k refunds. It is currently taking between 7 and 10 business days to process returns, with an additional two or three days for the funds to process through the banking system.

A number of taxpayers have requested updates regarding their particular tax refund status. For the vast majority of tax filers, your refund is likely still in processing. Please check our website at https://interactive.marylandtaxes.gov/indiv/refundstatus/home.aspx for more information.

However, here are some common reasons why there might be additional delays in receiving your 2023 Tax Refund:
• Your tax return contains errors, mathematical mistakes, or other incorrect line entries;
• Your tax return is missing W-2/1099 forms or other missing forms or schedules;
• Your legal name changed and now shows a Social Security Number mismatch;
• You claimed a tax credit that requires verification and/or supporting documentation not yet provided;
• Your tax return has incorrect direct deposit information, requiring a paper check to be mailed;
• Your refund has been offset to pay a debt to another government agency;
• Your personal income tax return has been identified as potentially fraudulent.

If your personal income tax return is identified as potentially fraudulent, our office will send you a letter in the mail notifying you that your return is under review. If you did not file a return, you may be the victim of identity theft. If that’s the case, you should contact our office using the instructions provided on the letter.
