Do you ever wonder what happens if you leave your life insurance benefit to a family member outside of the US?

Here’s what happens:

1. Payout Is Still Valid

NLG will honor the policy as long as it is active, premiums are up to date, and the claim is valid. The fact that the beneficiary is abroad does not disqualify them from receiving the money. The insurance company pays out regardless of residency.

2. Payment Logistics

• The beneficiary may need to provide additional documents such as:
• Proof of identity (passport, government ID).
• Proof of relationship (if applicable).
• Bank account details for international wire transfers.
• NLG usually pays in U.S. dollars. If the beneficiary wants the money in their local currency, their bank will convert it (possibly with fees and exchange rate costs).

3. Tax Considerations

• U.S. Taxes: Life insurance death benefits are generally not taxable income for beneficiaries in the U.S. The same applies to foreign beneficiaries—the U.S. doesn’t tax them on the payout.
• Foreign Taxes: The beneficiary’s country may tax the incoming money as inheritance, income, or a gift, depending on local laws. This is often where complications arise.

4. Delays & Compliance

• Because the beneficiary is overseas, there could be longer processing times due to international banking and anti–money laundering (AML) regulations.
• The beneficiary may need to complete additional forms (such as IRS Form W-8BEN) to certify they are not a U.S. taxpayer.

In short: The policy will still pay out. The main issues are paperwork, banking logistics, and potential taxes in the beneficiary’s country.
