A recent tax return review reminded me why experience matters.

A client came to us after receiving a notice showing they owed nearly $2,000. After reviewing the return, we discovered that the Virginia state tax withheld on their W-2 had not been reported, and additional questions about state tax payments had never been asked.

After correcting the return, the result changed dramatically:

➡️ From owing nearly $2,000
➡️ To receiving a $135 refund

That’s a swing of more than $2,100—all because of details that were overlooked.

This isn’t about criticizing another tax preparer. Mistakes can happen to anyone. It’s about highlighting the value of working with someone who takes the time to review your documents, ask the right questions, and understand how the tax laws apply to your situation.

Tax software doesn’t replace experience. It only works as well as the person using it.

If you’ve received a tax notice or you’re unsure whether your return was prepared correctly, it may be worth having a second set of eyes review it. Sometimes a careful review can make all the difference.

🏆 Employee of the Year Announcement 🏆

After a lengthy review process, several committee meetings, and absolutely no influence from the owner, The CF Group is proud to announce that Ivan Carlos has been named Employee of the Year.

As part of this prestigious award, Ivan will receive:

🌴 A family beach vacation to Florida (he’s paying for it not the biz)
☕ Unlimited coffee privileges (not coffee breaks)
📱 Permission to work while in Florida
🛶Potential allowance for kayak purchase (his wife’s birthday is coming up, maybe next year)

When asked how he felt about receiving the award, Ivan stated:

“I’m honored. I wasn’t expecting this at all, despite being the one who created the award. Three years in a row is unimaginable. This is how Kobe must’ve felt when 3-peating NBA championships”

In all seriousness, while we like to have a little fun, Ivan works hard to make sure every client receives top-notch service and attention. Whether it’s helping a business owner understand their numbers, meeting a deadline, continuing to study and pass CPA exams, or building The CF Group one client at a time, he is committed to constantly improving both professionally and personally.

Most importantly, he’s proud to be a husband and father first. Building a business is important, but providing for his family and setting an example for his children is what drives him every day.
