Ever get asked "wait, when can you actually retire?" and realize you're not 100% sure yourself?
You're not alone. Federal employee retirement eligibility isn't just one number — it depends on your age AND your years of service, and the combinations trip up a lot of good people.
Here's the short version. Full, unreduced retirement kicks in at your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) with 30 years in, at 60 with 20 years, or at 62 with just 5 years. Your MRA depends on your birth year — anywhere from 55 to 57.
There's also a reduced retirement option if you've got at least 10 years but not 30 — you can retire at your MRA, just with a permanent reduction in your annuity.
After nearly three decades in federal law enforcement, I've sat exactly where you're sitting, wondering if the math worked. Now I help federal employees and first responders figure out their real FERS retirement eligibility date, not just the textbook one.
What's your target retirement year? Drop it below, I'll tell you what to watch for.
