People drive to the lakefront with a camera, a blanket, and high hopes, and the sky delivers a gray wall of cloud. Meanwhile, a person carrying a bag of groceries across the Jewel Osco parking lot looks up and sees the most spectacular show of the year.
The lakefront crowd always arrives early. Couples spread out on the rocks at North Avenue Beach, a photographer sets up a tripod, and everyone waits with the kind of patience usually reserved for a late Red Line train. The sun slides behind a layer of thick gray, and a drizzle starts. A guy in a Cubs cap says it is a beautiful evening, and nobody believes him.
Then a woman walks out of Jewel Osco with a rotisserie chicken, a half gallon of milk, and a bunch of bananas. She glances up, and the whole sky has turned the color of a campfire. Orange, pink, and purple clouds stretch from one end of the lot to the other. A shopping cart rolls by in the foreground like it was hired for the shot.
The best part is how nobody in the parking lot reacts. A man loads bags into the trunk of a Honda and says, "Huh." A teenager pushes a train of carts toward the corral and does not even look up. A mom buckles a toddler into a car seat while the clouds go full Renaissance behind her. The grocery store may be an eyesore, but its sunset is a masterpiece.
That is the lesson of Chicago weather. The skyline sits in the mist, the lake keeps its mood to itself, and the real magic happens between a cart return and a pizza section. If you ever want to see a perfect sunset, skip the lakefront. Grab a coupon, park near the dumpster, and wait.
