Three Twenty One’s biweekly newsletter is called Buddy Talk and it is filled with encouraging stories from the Down Syndrome community and useful finance tips for special needs families.

But I consistently receive the most feedback and appreciation for the “a little more Luca” section of the email where I authentically share about the struggles and lessons that we learn from our son Luca.

We honestly believe that it takes a village to raise a child, and that is especially true for a child with special needs.

Emily and I have learned so much from other families on an unplanned journey who share the good, bad, and ugly that comes with having an atypical child. We are so grateful for those who came before us and trailblazed the path for inclusion and we view it as our mission to pick up the baton and keep making this world a better place for people like our son.

Our hope is that Buddy Talk and “a little more Luca” might help your unplanned journey be a little less lonely and more encouraging.

For those of you that are newer here, Three Twenty One was founded earlier this year by myself, Michael Green, a member of the Lucky Few. In 2019, my wife Emily and I welcomed our first born, Luca, into the world and he received a surprise birth diagnosis of Down Syndrome. For the last 3+ years we have been navigating this unplanned journey and we stumbled upon the amazing community that we didn’t realize we have always been missing.

Emily was quick to become an advocate and began sharing our true authentic story, the good and the bad, on her Instagram account . My journey to advocacy was slower. In 2021 I was able to shift my focus in my career of financial planning to working with families in the special needs comm.

As we know too well, having a loved one with special needs impacts all areas of your life and one that is often pushed to the back of the list is financial planning including estate planning, insurance planning, government benefits, etc. I have found that, when families invest the time to address these areas and be intentional, the peace of mind it gives you is invaluable.

So I decided to make the leap December of last year and started working on what has grown into Three Twenty One Financial Outfitters, a resource dedicated to pouring into our community and educating and informing. Let’s be honest for a second. Some days it can be really draining to be a part of the special needs community. I know a lot of us have seen by now the terrible story out of the high school in Elmhurst Illinois and some days it feels like there is an overwhelming amount of stories like that one, other mistreatment sometimes by those we entrust our kids to, health scares in the community, etc. We all empathize with one another and the individuals with special needs and it can feel like a losing battle at times. This is one of the main reasons I started our biweekly newsletter, Buddy Talk.

Buddy Talk focuses on bringing light to the many positive stories in our community that often are not shared as much as the negative ones. Our goal is to bring joy and rejuvenation to families in this unplanned journey with us while also providing helpful information along the way.
