"We should just buy a place here." 🏖️

WAIT. ✋

While a vacation home may not appeal to my family, clients make this comment all the time during a great trip. Before you buy that dream home, here are a few tips to consider:

🔹 The sticker price is only the start. Insurance, maintenance, HOA fees, furnishings, and other expenses can add up faster than expected.

🔹 The rental tax rules are not easy to calculate. The 14-day rule, passive activity limits, and depreciation may change your tax return. (Warning: Math) Be sure to check with your CPA about how the rental tax rules would apply in your situation.

🔹 Will the kids want it? Agree on it?

None of this is a reason not to buy. Several clients have cottages throughout the Midwest that they visit every summer. It's just a reason to do the numbers and have the family conversations before the offer, not after.

If you're a client considering a second home purchase, text me at 513-434-1930 to discuss if it makes sense.

Are you afraid to spend money in retirement? Some of us are great savers, some are excellent....spenders. 😁💵

My client conversations range from creating a budget to encouraging a retiree to buying the car they always wanted. Today's video covers the risks of spending too little after work life is finished.

Happy July! What financial to-do's are sticky notes on your desk or nightstand that stare at you each evening before bed?

Updating a beneficiary on your IRA, removing a deceased family member as your Power of Attorney, or.......just creating a Power of Attorney can be little tasks that still need to be tackled as we begin the back half of 2026.

If you're a client and one of these has been sitting on your to-do list, text me at 513-434-1930 and we'll work on it together.

"Wait. My ex would get my 401(k)?"

Sometimes, yes. 😬

The beneficiary forms on file for your retirement accounts, insurance policies, and other accounts are legally binding—and they almost always override whatever your final will says.

A former spouse still listed on a retirement account can inherit it. Someone written out of your will entirely can still receive an insurance payout. Assets intended for your children may pass to someone else because a form was never updated.

Who is on the bank account title with Mom? The answer may matter more than what her will says.

Are your accounts not up to date? Text me at 513-434-1930.

“I thought we were retiring next year.”

“I never said that.”

Oh boy.

That conversation changes plans quickly. One spouse may have been counting down the years. The other may still enjoy working, worry about healthcare, or simply not feel ready to leave their career behind.

Your numbers may say retirement is possible. But the family conversation may not be finished. Now what?

Planning your retirement party is not just about whether your 401(k) balance hits your target milestone. It is also about whether both people are picturing the same next stage of life.

Where will you live? How will you spend your time? What is your best and worst case scenario in ten years? Those questions are much easier to resolve before the retirement date is already circled on the calendar.

If you're having this conversation at home, it may be time for a conversation with your planner, too.
