Are you on a board, but finances maybe aren’t your primary strength?

Nonprofit financials can get dense fast; lots of terms, Lots of reports, and not always a lot of clarity!

These four questions can help cut through what can be considered financial “jargon:”

1) What changed since last month, and why?- This keeps the focus on movement, not just the numbers.

2) Are we on track with the budget we approved?- Simple check, but it tells you a lot about discipline and timing.

3) What are we worried about right now?- Every organization has pressure points. This surfaces them early.

4)- If you had to explain our financial position in plain language, what would you say? This one is underrated. If it can’t be explained simply, it’s worth digging into.

Good financial reporting should make decision-making easier, not more complicated!

Cash flow and profit get mixed up more than you’d think!

A business can look solid on paper and but still end up feeling every week like cash is tight. That usually comes down to timing, when money comes in, when it goes out, and what’s tied up in between.

Your profit only tells part of the story; the cash flow tells you what you actually have to work with.

If those two items aren’t lining up, it’s worth paying attention to and getting a second opinion on what to do moving forward!

According to the , ”Nearly 88% of entrepreneurs report experiencing at least one mental health challenge, with more than half reporting anxiety and over a third reporting burnout.”

In honor of , we want to shine a spotlight on the struggles and stressors of owners across the country.

Here are a few tips to try and reduce your stress as a small business owner when it comes to finances:

1) Keep your books current: Waiting until month-end (or later) turns small tasks into big ones. Staying consistent makes everything easier to manage and easier to trust.

2) Separate business and personal: Blended accounts create confusion fast. Clean separation keeps your records clear and cuts down on backtracking.

3) Don’t ignore the reports: You don’t need to analyze everything, but you should know what you’re looking at. Even a quick monthly review builds confidence.

4) Ask questions sooner: If something doesn’t make sense, don’t let it sit. Small clarifications now prevent bigger issues later.

5) Know when to hand it off: There’s a point where doing it yourself costs more in time and stress than it saves. Having the right support changes everything.

“Doing it right” usually takes longer.

It’s double-checking the numbers, asking one more question, and finding the root of the problem rather than making a quick fix.

If you rush rather than taking the time needed, you can end up with books that don’t make sense, reports that are inaccurate, and decisions not made on solid information. Sometimes you even end up spending more time fixing it down the road!

At we believe in doing it right every time, the first time around.

We're halfway through “National Small Business Week,” and this week always hits close to home for us!

Behind every set of books is a person making decisions, taking risks, and building something that matters. It’s early mornings, late nights, and a whole lot of figuring things out as you go.

To the small business owners doing the day-to-day and still thinking long-term, we see you, we are you, and we are here for you!

They are on time and accurate with the standard check-writing, bookkeeping, financial reporting and audits, but also super responsive with the multitude of unique requests I make all the time. Highly recommend Ivory Ledger Accounting!!!!”

If you’ve ever sat in a board meeting wishing the numbers were clearer, you’re not alone.

We work with nonprofit leaders who are wearing multiple hats, and financial reporting shouldn’t be the thing that slows you down.

Here’s how we support that:

1️⃣ Essential Accounting
Reliable, audit-ready books and reporting that keeps everyone on the same page.

2️⃣ Managed Accounting
Day-to-day support, donor and grant tracking, and reporting that actually reflects your programs and funding.

3️⃣ Consulting & Board Support
The kind of financial guidance that helps boards ask better questions and make confident decisions.

We want to help you stay focused on your mission and the good you bring to the community, not the reporting and numbers!
