How often do I check my 401(k)?

Honestly… not often enough to remember the balance 🤷‍♀️

I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at how I manage my own 401(k) — including:

🔐 Why I sometimes don’t even remember my account balance
📉 Why logging in too often can do more harm than good
📅 How often I do recommend checking your 401(k)
🔁 Why rebalancing matters (and how I automate it)
📝 The critical housekeeping items to look for when you do log in

As a financial advisor, it might surprise you to hear how little I check my own accounts. But there's a method to the (seeming) madness — and I explain it all in this episode.

How does a financial advisor manage their own 401(k)?

I’m pulling back the curtain and sharing how I manage my own 401(k) — yes, the same strategies I recommend to clients, I use myself.

Helpful Topics I'll Cover:

✔️How often I actually check my 401(k)

✔️Roth vs. Traditional contributions – and what I choose personally

✔️What I’m currently invested in & why

✔️Why I avoid target date funds (even though I recommend them for others)

✔️When to rebalance, and how I handle it

✔️Common 401(k) mistakes (and how to avoid them)

I'm also sharing why checking your beneficiaries and avoiding 401(k) loans is non-negotiable.

Whether you're years away from retirement or just getting serious about saving, this episode will give you practical tips from someone who's not just talking the talk.

The cost of cars, both new and used have nearly broken records in the last few years 🚗.

Not only are new cars expensive, but used cars continue to hold a high cost as well.

There are situations when buying a new car may actually be the smarter decision, however, in a more typical car market, I would actually consider it a waste of your money!

New cars decrease in value significantly the moment you drive them off the lot 🚘. They may have perks that are appealing initially, but you should consider why you are going for new vs. used and make sure it's the best decision for you financially.

Over the years. I've noticed common things people waste their hard-earned money on.

I've never been a handbag person myself 👜, but this is one of the most common things I consider to be a dumb way people waste their money.

If you are someone who truly enjoys the bags and has the means to purchase them comfortably, it makes sense to make these types of purchases! 💵

BUT, it falls under this category when people start purchasing these items simply for appearance to others, as a status symbol. They want to appear as though they have a lot of money, whether it's true or not.

Consider limiting yourself to fewer purchases like this, or even none. Take the time to look inward and ask yourself why you are buying it.

I see examples of people wasting their money all the time as an advisor. One that REALLY bothers me: Buy Now, Pay Later programs!

These have become increasingly popular in the previous two or three years. Basically, a website will ask you to pay a small portion of what you owe for your purchase, with the idea that you'll pay the rest later.

This isn't ALWAYS a bad idea. Are you buying a couch and won't receive it for a few months? It's not uncommon to only pay part of it now, and the rest when the couch arrives 🛋 (interest free of course).

Where we start to see a problem, is people who have multiple buy now pay later "loans" out there at once. Or having to use these programs just to buy basic necessities like groceries. 🍅🍇🥓

It's easy to lose track and therefore miss payments. This can result in high fees, which you don't want to sped your hard earned 💰 on.
