Proposed regulations for the new Education Freedom Credit

Treasury and IRS are providing proposed regulations for the new Education Freedom Tax Credit. The credit, effective Jan. 1, 2027 allows eligible taxpayers to claim up to $1,700.00 annually or $3,400.00 for married couples filing jointly, for qualifying cash contributions to scholarship-granting organizations.

These organizations provide scholarships to help eligible K-12 grade students cover educational expenses, including tuition, tutoring and other qualifying costs. The credit is non-refundable and unused amounts may be carried forward for up to five years.

States must elect to participate and identify eligible scholarship-granting organizations. Taxpayers may contribute to qualifying organizations regardless of their state of residence. For participating states, visit Federal Scholarship Tax Credit on IRS.gov.

Businesses can donate to eligible scholarship-granting organizations, but the credit is intended for individual taxpayers, not businesses.

For details about this new credit read the Treasury Department's fact sheet.

When Paying the IRS Isn’t Possible: A Look at CNC Status

Not every taxpayer with IRS debt has the ability to pay—even over time. In situations of genuine financial hardship, the IRS may place an account into Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status, temporarily stopping collection efforts.

At Innovative Tax Solutions, we help taxpayers use CNC strategically when payment simply isn’t realistic.

What Is CNC Status?

Currently Not Collectible status is used when the IRS determines that collecting payment would prevent a taxpayer from meeting basic living needs. When approved, collection actions such as levies and garnishments are paused.

CNC provides breathing room—but the debt itself does not disappear.

Example: How CNC Works

Maria owes $41,000 in IRS debt following a divorce and reduced income. After covering housing, childcare, and basic expenses, she has no money left to pay the IRS.

With professional guidance, Maria submits financial information demonstrating hardship. The IRS agrees to place her account in CNC status, stopping collection actions while her financial situation improves.

How We Can Help

Qualifying for CNC requires more than simply saying you can’t pay. Innovative Tax Solutions evaluates your finances, prepares the required disclosures, and communicates with the IRS to protect you from unnecessary enforcement.

If IRS debt feels overwhelming and payment isn’t possible right now, contact Innovative Tax Solutions for a confidential consultation to determine whether CNC status makes sense for you.

IRS reminder: Cybersecurity Awareness Month offers simple steps to protect tax data
Simple cybersecurity habits can help taxpayers and organizations stay safer online
IR-2026-119 Oct. 2, 2026

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today encouraged taxpayers to take simple steps to strengthen online security during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month highlights the role everyone can play in protecting personal, financial and tax information from identity thieves and scammers. For taxpayers, tax professionals and organizations across the tax community, that starts with everyday actions that help strengthen online security.

"Criminals continue to look for new ways to steal taxpayer information and exploit trusted partnerships," said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano.

"Taxpayers and tax professionals can help protect sensitive information and strengthen the security of the tax system by making cybersecurity practices part of their routine year-round."

The IRS joins the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and Security Summit partners in encouraging taxpayers to make cybersecurity part of their daily routine. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers cybersecurity resources that individuals, families, businesses and organizations can use to strengthen their online security.

Take simple steps to strengthen cybersecurity

The IRS encourages taxpayers and tax professionals, businesses and other organizations to take these steps:

Use strong, unique passwords. Use different passwords for important accounts and consider using a password manager.

Turn on multifactor authentication if available, to add an extra layer of protection to online accounts.

Update software and devices. Install updates on computers, phones, tablets, apps, browsers and security software. Turn on automatic updates when possible.

Recognize and report scams. Be cautious of unexpected emails, text messages, social media messages, phone calls or letters that request personal or financial information or pressure taxpayers to act immediately.

Protect tax records. Store digital tax records securely, encrypt sensitive files and back up important information.

Use secure networks. Avoid using public Wi-Fi to access financial accounts, tax records or IRS online services.

Watch for tax scams

Scammers continue to use U.S. mail, emails, text messages, social media and phone calls to impersonate the IRS and other trusted organizations. These scams may promise a larger refund, claim a taxpayer's account is locked, demand immediate payment or direct taxpayers to fake websites.

Businesses, payroll professionals and human resources offices should remain alert for phishing, fake invoices, W-2 and payroll-related schemes designed to steal employee information, credentials or money. Requests to change sensitive employee or payment information should be verified through a trusted channel.

Tax professionals, including enrolled agents, payroll professionals, certified public accountants (CPA), attorneys, or other tax return preparers, should watch for phishing emails and other schemes designed to steal sensitive taxpayer data. Scammers may pose as a prospective client or use a compromised email account to persuade tax professionals to open malicious links or attachments.

IRS tools can help

The IRS offers secure online tools and resources that can help protect accounts and tax information:

Get an Identity Protection PIN. An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number that helps prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return using a taxpayer's Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number.

Online Account for Individuals. Taxpayers can securely access personal tax information, view notices, make payments and manage other tax tasks.

Business Tax Account. Businesses can securely access available tax information and manage certain tax responsibilities online.

Tax Pro Account. Tax professionals can securely manage active client authorizations and submit authorization requests online.

Written Information Security Plan. Federal law requires tax and accounting professionals to create and maintain a WISP to protect client information.

How to know it's the IRS

The IRS normally contacts taxpayers the first time by mail. The IRS sends emails or text messages only when taxpayers opt in and never sends direct messages through social media. The IRS or private collection agencies may call about account matters, but the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, threaten arrest or tell taxpayers they are due a refund.

Taxpayers should not click links, open attachments or respond to unexpected messages claiming to be from the IRS.

Report scams and suspicious contacts

Taxpayers who receive suspicious tax-related U.S. mail, emails, text messages, or social media messages should visit IRS.gov/SubmitATip to find the appropriate way to report the issue. Taxpayers can also report suspected tax fraud, scams, identity theft, or other tax-related wrongdoing.

Tax professionals who experience a data breach should report it as soon as possible to their stakeholder liaison.

New IRS app gives taxpayers a new way to access services

Taxpayers now have a new way to securely access IRS tools and account services through their mobile devices. The new IRS app has replaced the former IRS2Go app. There are several features and self-service options available to help taxpayers access their tax information with ease.

Key app features for taxpayers
Taxpayers can securely sign in to the app to access available account information and self-service options, including:

Check refund and amended-return status
View available balance information
Make payments and review payment activity
View select notices and letters
Access available tax records and transcripts
Manage certain profile and communication preferences
Access an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
How to get the official IRS app

The IRS app is free and available through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Current IRS2Go users do not need to download a separate app.

Users with automatic updates enabled will receive the IRS app through the normal update process.

Taxpayers can also visit IRS App on IRS.gov for verified links and additional information.

The IRS app does not replace IRS.gov or IRS online accounts

The IRS app is an expansion of mobile access to selected IRS Individual Online Account services but doesn't replace IRS.gov or IRS online accounts. IRS.gov will continue to provide comprehensive tax information, guidance, forms, tools and services.

Beware of fake IRS apps or links
Taxpayers should use verified IRS links or the official IRS app listings and be cautious of look-alike apps, advertisements and unsolicited messages claiming to provide access to IRS accounts.

The IRS won't ask taxpayers to provide sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up message. Taxpayers who are unsure whether a message or app is legitimate should avoid clicking unsolicited links and use verified resources to locate the official app.

If taxpayers suspect scams or other tax-related wrongdoing, they can submit a confidential tip through the online fraud reporting tool using a smartphone, tablet, or computer at https://www.irs.gov/help/report-fraud

Can the IRS Take Your Retirement Accounts?

Few IRS fears hit harder than this one. For many taxpayers, retirement accounts represent years—or decades—of disciplined saving. So when IRS debt enters the picture, a common and deeply emotional question arises: Can the IRS take my 401(k) or IRA?

The short answer is yes. Understanding when retirement accounts are at risk (and when they’re not) can help you avoid panic, bad decisions, and costly mistakes.

Why Retirement Accounts Feel “Off Limits”

Most people assume retirement accounts are protected because:
• They’re intended for future income
• Other creditors often can’t touch them
• They may be governed by federal or employer plans

While those assumptions hold true for many private creditors, the Internal Revenue Service plays by different rules.

What Authority the IRS Actually Has

The IRS has the legal power to levy retirement accounts—but only after meeting strict requirements. These include:
• Providing proper notice
• Allowing appeal rights
• Demonstrating that other collection options are insufficient

Even then, retirement account levies are generally considered a last resort, not a first move.

In most cases, the IRS prefers easier collection methods like wage garnishments, bank levies, or payment plans.

The Biggest Mistake Taxpayers Make Out of Fear

Fear often drives people to drain retirement accounts themselves to “get ahead” of the IRS. This can be disastrous.

Early withdrawals may trigger:
• Income taxes
• Penalties
• Loss of long-term financial security
Worse, the IRS may still pursue additional collection afterward—leaving you with less protection and fewer options.

How Proper Strategy Protects Retirement Savings

A strategic approach focuses on:
• Stopping enforcement before it escalates
• Using payment plans or hardship status
• Structuring resolutions that preserve protected assets
• Communicating with the IRS before extreme measures are considered

At Innovative Tax Solutions, we help taxpayers understand real risk versus perceived risk—and take action before fear-driven decisions cause irreversible harm.

Final Thought: The IRS Can—but Usually Doesn’t

Yes, the IRS can take retirement accounts. But in practice, it’s uncommon and usually avoidable with early, informed action.

If you owe the IRS and are worried about your 401(k), IRA, or pension, guessing can be expensive. Innovative Tax Solutions can review your situation, explain your true exposure, and help you protect what you’ve worked so hard to build.

Contact Innovative Tax Solutions today for a confidential consultation—and replace fear with facts before the IRS makes the next move.

TRUMP ACCOUNT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

What happens when your child turns 18?

Trump Accounts are designed to give children years to invest, learn, and build a financial foundation. But what happens when your child officially becomes an adult? At 18, the account will enter a new chapter. Your child gains control of their account and can decide whether to keep their money invested or begin using it for their future.

The account becomes theirs

Until adulthood, a parent or guardian manages the Trump Account on the child's behalf. Once a child reaches 18, they take responsibility for the account and begin making their own financial decisions.

That means the years leading up to 18 are not only an opportunity to build their investment. They are also a chance to teach your child about saving, investing, and thinking ahead so they are prepared to manage their money when the time comes.

Options for their money

Turning 18 does not mean your child has to withdraw their money. They can choose to leave it invested and give it more time to potentially grow.

They can also begin taking distributions from the account. After the account's growth period ends, it generally follows traditional IRA rules. Depending on how the money is used, taxes and an additional 10% early distribution tax may apply. Certain uses, including qualified higher education expenses and qualifying first home purchases, may be exceptions to that additional tax.

A new chapter begins at 18

Reaching adulthood marks an important transition for both the account and the child who owns it. Whether they continue investing or eventually use the funds toward an important milestone, like college or a first home, they can begin making their own financial decisions with years of investing already behind them.

IRS launches new mobile app, expanding digital services for taxpayers

IRS2Go becomes IRS app, adding secure mobile access to selected Individual Online Account services

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced the launch of the new IRS mobile app, replacing IRS2Go and expanding the agency's digital services to give taxpayers more ways to securely access IRS tools and account services from their mobile devices.

"The new IRS app puts more services at taxpayers' fingertips," said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. "It advances our digital-first agenda to meet taxpayers how and where they choose to interact with the IRS, whether at home or on the go. Our goal is to make IRS services easy to access and more consistent across all of our platforms."

For more than a decade, IRS2Go has helped taxpayers check refund status and find free filing resources. The new IRS app builds on that foundation by adding a broader set of secure, account-specific features. Taxpayers can now securely sign in to the official IRS app and access selected account information and self-service options, including:

Check refund and amended-return status
View available balance information
Make payments and review payment activity
View select notices and letters
Access available tax records and transcripts
Manage certain profile and communication preferences
Access an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
This is just the beginning—the IRS will continue expanding the app with new capabilities and services over time.

The IRS app is free and available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Current IRS2Go users do not need to download a separate app. Users with automatic updates enabled will receive the IRS app through the normal update process. Taxpayers can also visit IRS App on IRS.gov for verified links and additional information.

The IRS app expands secure mobile access to selected IRS Individual Online Account services. It does not replace IRS.gov or the IRS online accounts. IRS.gov continues to provide comprehensive tax information, guidance, forms, tools and services. IRS Individual Online Account, Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account will continue to be available through IRS.gov, with the IRS app initially extending selected Individual Online Account features only. Telephone and in-person assistance also remain available for taxpayers who need individualized help or whose issues cannot be resolved through self-service.

Taxpayers should use verified IRS links or the official IRS app listings in the Apple App Store and Google Play and be cautious of look-alike apps, advertisements and unsolicited messages claiming to provide access to IRS accounts. The IRS will not ask taxpayers to provide sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up message. Taxpayers who are unsure whether a message or app is legitimate should avoid clicking unsolicited links and use verified resources to locate the official app.
