You don't have to understand everything happening in QuickBooks to understand your business.

Most business owners didn't start their business because they wanted to learn accounting.

You should know how your business is doing.

You should understand whether you're making money.

And you should be able to look at your financial reports without feeling completely lost.

But you don't need to know how every transaction gets categorized or why a particular entry was made in QuickBooks.

That's part of what a bookkeeper is there for.

Good bookkeeping should make the financial side of your business easier to understand, not give you another complicated system to learn.

September is a good time for a bookkeeping check-in.

There are still several months left in the year, which means there's time to deal with bookkeeping issues before they turn into year-end problems.

Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?

Is QuickBooks current?

Are there transactions you've been meaning to figure out?

Would you feel comfortable sending your financial reports to your CPA today?

If the answer to any of those is no, you don't have to wait until January to deal with it.

A little attention now can make year-end much easier.

And if you've fallen further behind than you'd like, that's okay too. Cleanup and catch-up bookkeeping is exactly what it's there for.
