This is large leaf basil that has bolted, primarily due to the excessive rainfall in southeast Texas. These white flowers smell just like an Italian kitchen, well almost.

If you haven't done it already, it is time to start thinking about companion plants. Here's the chart the Farmers Almanac has published.

Companion planting is nature’s way of minimizing pest damage, boosting soil fertility, reducing w**d competition, and, ultimately, increasing yields 🌱💪 Productive gardens cultivated with companion planting in mind also tend to look better! For a tried-and-true way to reduce pests, attract pollinators, and boost growth, use our Companion Planting Chart when adding plants to your garden. Greetings to Our Mushroom Loving Friends! This photo is one of several mushrooms we are noticing at the edge of our Wildflower bed. We do not raise mushrooms here at Ava Farms so it would be greatly appreciated if you would help us identify it.

Need Plants That Make Your Garden Spectacular!?

This photo was taken yesterday (April 30) in southeast Texas, and these two flowers are the first for 2025. This is a very "tough" variety of Lantana which stays at about three feet tall. It doesn't need fertilizer, doesn't need pruning, lives and prospers during the most storm-driven parts of spring, hasn't ever had deer even so much as nibble at it, and absolutely LOVES the hot summers of Texas (just give it some water about once a week when the ground gets dry). This plant is now being sold as a trio on Amazon. If you are looking for an easy-to-care-for plant. This is it. Check it now as these will go quickly... Here's the link: https://amzn.to/4jxN7d1

Happy Earth Day, Everyone! It wouldn't be Earth Day without sharing a photo of a field of a Texas Wildflower. This is Indian Paintbrush. It's a very cheerful bright orange and coral color. It's bouquet at the top of this plant is also very top-heavy. It cannot survive without all the other plants and w**ds around it. Otherwise it would bend over and die. This is why you will always see it mixed in with its other "plant friends".

Flip It or Not To Flip!? That IS the Question...

While Stanley Tumblers are very popular, this latest craze for the Flip Straw Tumbler says it all! Keep your favorite beverage chilled for 12 hours or iced for up to 2 DAYS! This is the trendy gadget you need for summer - to go camping - to head for the lake or the beach - or for hiking on that trail your friend talked you into (just kidding!). Tired of Birds Stealing Your Crops!?

At the first onset of grapes, we wrapped our soon-to-be grape clusters in these fruit bags and couldn't be more pleased! These bags work well for protecting small crops like peaches, apples, grapes, mangoes, tomatoes, peppers, etc., and they have ties at the top that not even the Texas windstorms can blow these bags off the grapevines. We're expecting a grand harvest this summer, without all the bird pecks and bites! If your harvest could be better or is minimal at best, check these protection bags out. For just pennies, you can save yourself the hassle of unwanted crop thieves...

Do you use fruit bags to protect your grapes, apples, etc. from birds or other critters? This is the first year of using fruit bags on the grapevines here, and I would really like to know your thoughts on this since I just started putting the bags on yesterday and don't want to mess this up.

FROST WARNING FOR 4/7: If you are in southeast Texas tonight, it is time to once again bring plants inside and/or cover up the tender plants outside that may not be strong enough to survive frost. You wouldn't want to look at your plants tomorrow and realize that they didn't make it...
