Our work family is deeply saddened by the loss of Erin’s brother. Losing a sibling is such a terrible, empty feeling. He was also the husband of Julie, who works part-time for us during tax season. Cancer is such an ugly disease. He fought a hard fight. Please keep the family in your prayers! Fly high big brother.

I would like to take this opportunity to share a little update regarding our current office manager, Katherine, who has been having some health issues and has undergone major surgery. While we have held that position open because we would love to have her back, she feels her health will not allow this; however, she will continue to be part of the family. Although we have to move forward in filling this position, please keep her in your prayers, along with the firm, as we make hasty decisions heading into tax season.

Does your accountant/tax preparer have a VA Board of Accountancy certificate hanging on his/her wall? If not, that person is NOT a CPA. Our firm has gotten numerous new clients over the past few months that all refer to their current person as their CPA. Nobody calls a medical assistant a doctor, a realtor a broker, a paraprofessional a lawyer, so please stop giving these people a professional designation they have not earned. There is a lot of higher education required, a stringent four part national exam that currently has a 20% pass rate for first-time takers, annual continuing education requirements, and over-site by the VA Board of Accountancy, the AICPA, and the VSCPA. Know the credentials of the person who is having you sign a legal document with the U. S. government.
