Pension VS Other Employer Retirement Plans (i.e.401k)

In this line of work, I often hear "I have a 401k through my job" or "I have life insurance through my job" as if they will never leave or be fired from their current job.

If you have these important assets through your employer, you leave it up to your employer to dictate how you use them.

When it comes to your employer retirement plan, you are typically unable to touch YOUR MONEY until you are either 59 and a half. When it comes to your life insurance through your employer, your descendants may need to wait for 3 to 6 months to claim your death benefits. In my opinion, that is way too long to leave your family unsecured.
