Hey Colorado Springs small business owners! 👋

Running your own thing is exciting, but many folks don't realize there are important layers of compliance to stay protected and professional—especially before things get busy or an issue pops up.

To operate as a legitimate small business here:

✅ State level — Register your business entity with the Colorado Secretary of State. This makes your business official and provides some liability protection.

✅ Local level (County & City) — Check zoning rules, any required permits, or specific registrations (Colorado Springs doesn't mandate a general business license for most types, but certain activities or locations might need one—always verify with the city/county).

✅ Taxes & Other Basics — If you sell goods (or certain services), get a sales tax license from the Colorado Department of Revenue. If you have employees, handle withholding, unemployment insurance, etc.

✅ Insurance — Carry appropriate coverage (like general liability, workers' comp if applicable, commercial auto) to protect yourself, your team, and your clients/customers from accidents, claims, or unexpected events. Many partners, landlords, or clients require proof.

Not every business needs every single thing right away, and that's okay for startups testing the waters! But getting these pieces in place early saves headaches, builds credibility, and keeps "too late" moments from happening.

If you're a local entrepreneur and aren't 100% sure about your setup—or just want a quick gut check on what's needed for your situation—DM me! I'm happy to educate, point you to resources, or help you get compliant (we handle ALL of this). No pressure, just here to help fellow small biz folks thrive. 💪

Let's build strong, compliant businesses that last!

🚨 S-Corp Owners: The IRS is using AI to audit your books in 2025 — are you ready? 🚨
As we wrap up the year, here are the 5 AI red flags the IRS will scan for:
1️⃣ Unreasonable salary – Too low? AI compares your W-2 to industry norms.
2️⃣ Bank mismatches – P&L doesn’t match deposits? Instant flag.
3️⃣ Home office/vehicle overuse – AI uses Google Maps & Zillow to verify space & miles.
4️⃣ Round-number expenses – $500 meals every Friday? Looks suspicious.
5️⃣ Missing 1099s – Paid a contractor $600+? AI knows if you didn’t file.
💡 Pro Tip: Clean books + receipts + defensible salary = AI-proof.
📩 DM me or reply “AI CHECK” and I’ll send you a free year-end compliance checklist for S-Corps.

💼 Hey business owners—ever wonder if the IRS sees your “business” as a hobby?

I just had a tough but honest chat with a client who’s pouring 40+ hrs/wk into their company… but pulling out less than $10k/yr in profit.

Here’s the reality:
✅ The IRS uses a 9-factor test to decide if it’s a business or hobby.
✅ Too many “no” answers? They’ll limit your deductions (no more writing off losses against your day job).

Good news: It’s your choice!
1️⃣ Embrace the hobby → File Schedule C, keep it fun, no pressure to profit.
2️⃣ Recommit to profit → Set a $ target, cut fat, document the plan.

Either path is valid. Just don’t let the IRS decide for you.

👉 Quick self-check: Do you have contracts, separate accounts, and a profit plan? If not, let’s talk before audit season.

Today, I negotiated 50% software discounts for my clients because I know times are tough all over. On the low end, I saved them $228/yr. One client will save over $1200! Yes, I may be cranky. I may be a nag but I really do care about my clients. If you are working with people who don't care about you or your business maybe it's time for a change. I have a few openings for new bookkeeping clients - drop me a message to discuss.

She will never see this but kudos to Jean at QBO for helping me help them out!

Having spent 25 years in the Chicago construction market, I can confirm this to be true.

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House.

One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."

The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."

The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"

The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."

"Done!" replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how things work.

The next time you’re stuck, overwhelmed, or procrastinating…

Buy a can of Goya beans.

Sounds ridiculous, right?

That’s what I thought too — until I heard this story from a business mentor I respect.

He was working with a business owner who just couldn’t move forward.

Stuck in his head. Overthinking everything.

He knew what needed to be done… but wasn’t doing any of it.

So the mentor gave him one task:

“Go to the store and buy a can of Goya beans.”

The guy said, “Wait… what? Why?”

And the mentor replied:

“No questions. Just go. Buy the beans. Take a picture. Send it to me.”

So he did. Still confused.

Goes to the store, grabs a random can of Goya beans, comes home, snaps a pic, sends it.

The mentor calls and says:

“Perfect. Now you get it.”

He’s like, “Get what?”

And the mentor says:

“It’s not about the beans. It’s about movement. It’s about breaking the cycle of inaction. You don’t need the perfect next step. You just need a next step.”

Then he told him:

“Keep that can of Goya beans on your desk. Every time you feel stuck…

Every time you want to overthink instead of act…

Look at that can and remember:

GOYA = Get Off Your Ass.”

I love that.

Because as business owners, we don’t always need more strategy.

Sometimes we just need to move.

Even if it starts with a can of beans.
