Waiting to Negotiate With the IRS Might Be the Costliest Mistake You Make:
A few years ago, I spoke with someone who was clearly exhausted. Behind on taxes.
Income had dropped. Bills were stacking up. And yet, the first thing they said to me was:
“I know I owe the IRS… but I’ll deal with it once things get better.”
They thought they were being responsible.
They thought waiting was the smart move.
It wasn’t.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: the best time to negotiate with the IRS is when you’re struggling financially—not after you’ve recovered.
The IRS doesn’t base relief on how much you owe.
They base it on what you can realistically afford right now.
When income is low and finances are tight, the IRS is far more open to:
Settling tax debt for less than the full amount
Temporarily stopping collections
Offering very low monthly payments
Removing penalties due to hardship
Those programs exist because people fall on hard times.
But when that same person waited until their income improved, everything changed.
On paper, they now “looked” like they could afford more.
The IRS saw higher income—not the stress, not the catch-up bills, not the months of struggle behind them.
The result?
Higher payments.
Fewer options.
Thousands of dollars lost that could have been saved.
This is the part that feels backward—but it’s true:
The better you look financially, the less leverage you have with the IRS.
Waiting until life stabilizes may feel safer, but it often closes the door to real relief. Meanwhile, penalties and interest continue to grow, and the IRS can become more aggressive the longer the debt sits unresolved.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m barely keeping my head above water,” please hear this:
That is not a reason to avoid the IRS.
That is the exact reason to address it now.
You don’t have to be “back on your feet” to get help.
In fact, being honest about where you are financially may be what helps you move forward sooner—and with far less damage.
If you’re unsure what options might be available in your situation, getting clarity early can make all the difference.
You don’t have to wait for things to get better to start fixing this.
Is beating tax-debt worth taking 15 mins to see if we're the right fit to work together?
Make the decision to not look over your shoulder anymore - future you will thank you.
