Not the one about the land. The land has its own story and everybody can see it.

The one that doesn't get told is yours. What it cost you personally. The years that were close. The times you made a call in the dark with no guarantee it was right — and made it anyway because someone had to.

Today is National Dog Day, which on most operations is just called Wednesday.

He was there before daylight. He rode in the truck to check water. He supervised the fence repair with what can only be described as opinions. He has never once been asked to do any of this and would be deeply offended if told to stay home.

Every farm and ranch has one. The dog who thinks the whole place is his responsibility. Who knows the sound of the right truck coming up the road. Who's been to more branding pens, hay fields, and grain elevators than most people ever will.

They work for nothing. They ask for nothing. And somewhere in the middle of a hard year, they've been the reason more than one person kept their head on straight.

Here's to the farm dogs and ranch dogs. The good ones. The muddy ones. The ones who've been gone a while and still get talked about at the table.

Ask anyone who's been doing this a while and they'll have a story.

The year the combine broke down at the worst possible moment and three trucks showed up before dark. The stretch in the hospital when the chores somehow kept getting done. The neighbor who never said a word about it, just started showing up.

Nobody keeps score. Nobody sends an invoice. It's just understood — that's what you do.

You won't find that written down in any operating agreement. But it's one of the most valuable things any farm or ranch family has, and it doesn't show up on a balance sheet anywhere.

To whoever showed up for you: they probably know. But it wouldn't hurt to tell them.

August has a particular feeling to it.

The days run long and hot. Equipment is running. Somebody's hauling water, somebody's checking fence, and everybody's tired by eight o'clock.

But there's also the evening light that makes the whole place look like something out of a painting. There's the county fair coming up. There's a kid somewhere on your operation who thinks driving the tractor is the greatest privilege ever granted to a human being — and honestly, they might be right.

This is the season people picture when they imagine this life. And for once, the picture's accurate.

Every operation has one.

The odometer stopped working during a different presidential administration. The driver's door needs a specific technique. There's a toolbox in the bed that hasn't been fully inventoried since roughly 2009, and a jacket behind the seat that belongs to nobody anyone can identify.

It has hauled feed, calves, fence posts, groceries, at least one Christmas tree, and a teenager to their first day of a job they hated.

Somebody offered to buy it once. That went about how you'd expect.

It doesn't need to be nice. It needs to start. And every single morning, it does.
