⚠️⚠️⚠️Attention ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Unemployment compensation on your 2020 tax return, The bill just passed through congress that will make $10,200 of unemployment nontaxable on the 2020 Federal tax return for people with income less than $150k.
If the president signs it into law on Friday there will still be a wait.
We must wait until the IRS issues guidance on how they want it reported (whether there will be an extra form, like for social security, where we put how much UI there was and then subtract out the $10,200, leaving the balance to flow to the 1040), etc.
Then each state will need to decide and report how they are going to handle it. Some states will decide to still tax it, some will not.
Then our software will have to update to include the new changes/forms for federal and state.
So, even through this could be very good news for most of you, it's not going to happen overnight. It might be the beginning of April before we have the capability to actually file these returns. So, just try to be patient. If we're getting near the deadline we will communicate with you about potentially taking an extension, but we're hoping that will not be necessary.
If you had withholding on that portion of your UI it will be refunded to you on your 2020 tax return (or amendment if we already filed you).
If you don't want to wait and you want us to file now so you can get your refund you can and amend your return later but there will be a fee for the fed and state amendments.
