📊 WEDNESDAY EDUCATION | WHAT MAKES A BUSINESS EXPENSE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?

Not every expense qualifies as a business tax deduction!

Generally, the IRS requires business expenses to be ordinary and necessary to your business operations.

✅ Ordinary: Common and accepted in your industry.
✅ Necessary: Helpful and appropriate for your business.
✅ Documented: Maintain accurate records and receipts to support your deductions.

💡 Why does this matter? Understanding what qualifies can help you avoid costly tax mistakes and identify legitimate opportunities to reduce your tax liability.

📅 Join us Friday! We'll reveal Monday's trivia answer and share examples of deductible business expenses.

✅ FRIDAY’S ANSWER | BUILD IN CHECKS & BALANCES

So, what internal controls should your organization have in place?

Start with a few basic safeguards:

1. Separate financial duties.
Whenever possible, the person approving a transaction shouldn't be the same person responsible for recording and paying it.

2. Reconcile accounts regularly.
Bank and financial records should be reviewed and reconciled consistently so discrepancies can be identified.

3. Include independent review.
Periodic external reviews or audits add another level of oversight to your financial processes.

The takeaway?

Good internal controls aren't about making business more complicated. They're about protecting what you've worked to build.

If your financial processes depend too heavily on one person, it may be time to take a closer look at your system.

📊 WEDNESDAY EDUCATION | WHY INTERNAL CONTROLS MATTER

On Monday, we asked what internal controls your organization has in place to help prevent fraud or financial mismanagement.

Why did we ask?

Because when one person handles everything, your organization can become unnecessarily vulnerable.

Think about your financial process:

Who approves the transaction?
Who records it?
Who makes the payment?
Who verifies that everything is correct?

Internal controls aren't simply about distrust. They're about creating accountability, accuracy, and safeguards within your financial operations.

Today, take a closer look at your process. If the same person is responsible for most—or all—of those steps, that's something worth examining.

Friday, we'll share some basic controls that can strengthen your financial processes.

🤔 YOUR MONDAY FINANCIAL TRIVIA!

What internal controls does your organization have in place to prevent fraud or financial mismanagement?

Think about how money moves through your organization.

Who approves transactions?
Who records them?
Who makes the payments?
And who checks the work?

You may have a process—but does that process include the right checks and balances?

💬 Share your thoughts in the comments.

Come back Wednesday. We’ll explain why this question matters.
