Your mileage rate changed halfway through 2026 β€” are you using both rates?

The IRS set the 2026 business standard mileage rate at 72.5 cents per mile for January 1–June 30, then raised it to 76 cents per mile for July 1–December 31. Split your log at July 1, keep the date, miles, destination, and purpose for every business trip, and do not count commuting to your regular workplace.

Call (951) 223-1881 or visit accountistryllp.com to get your mileage log and books set up right before year-end.

File your own 1099s? The IRS is retiring FIRE, the e-file system behind them. November 19 at 3 p.m. ET is the last day to file through FIRE, and after January 1 IRIS is the only system β€” for current-year returns, prior years, and corrections. Apply for your IRIS transmitter code now, not in January filing week. If a provider files for you, get written confirmation they are IRIS-ready.

Year-end tax planning has a deadline β€” most moves stop working on December 31.

Start with clean books so you know your real profit. Place equipment you actually need in service by Dec 31 (Section 179 limit for 2026: $2,560,000), set up retirement funding, check S-corp salary before distributions, and plan for the final 2026 estimate due January 15, 2027.

Call (951) 223-1881 or visit accountistryllp.com to book a year-end review.

Paid contractors in 2026? October is the month to get your 1099 house in order. The IRS raised the 1099-NEC threshold to $2,000 for 2026 payments (it was $600), but you still need a W-9 from every contractor before you pay β€” no TIN on file means 24% backup withholding. Deadline: February 1, 2027.

Got an IRS notice? Don't panic. πŸ’Ό

Most IRS letters are about a balance due, a changed refund, or a question on your return β€” and responding the right way matters. Read the whole letter, compare it to your return, respond by the date printed on it, and remember: real IRS contact starts by mail, not by phone call, email, or text.

Responding on time is also how you protect your appeal rights. If you owe and can't pay in full, pay what you can by the due date and ask about a payment plan.

5 new tax breaks are in effect for 2026 under the new federal tax law β€” and most people don't know they qualify. πŸ’‘

Swipe through: no tax on tips (deduct up to $25,000 of reported tips), no tax on overtime (deduct up to $12,500 of the premium β€” $25,000 for joint filers), a $6,000 senior bonus deduction at 65+, up to $10,000 in car-loan interest on a new U.S.-assembled car, and a SALT cap raised to $40,000.

These are deductions you claim on your return β€” each has income limits and eligibility rules, so plan before December 31. Not sure which ones apply to you? Call (951) 223-1881 or visit accountistryllp.com. We'll find every dollar. πŸ“ž

Stop mixing your business and personal money β€” it costs more than you think.

When every expense runs through one account, deductible business spending hides between groceries and streaming bills. Come tax time, that means missed deductions, messy books, and a bigger bill than you deserved.

Worse: the IRS requires your records to support every deduction you claim (IRS Publication 583), and for LLC owners, commingling funds is one of the top reasons courts pierce the corporate veil β€” putting personal assets at risk.

The fix is simple: a separate business checking account, a dedicated business card, clean owner transfers β€” and reconcile every month. Ten minutes a month beats ten painful hours next April.

The IRS just dropped a brand-new app. πŸ“± Check your refund, see your balance, make payments, read IRS notices, pull transcripts, and grab your Identity Protection PIN β€” all from your phone. It replaces IRS2Go (just update the app if you already have it). ⚠️ Download only from official app stores or verified IRS links β€” the IRS never asks for personal info by text or email. Save this for tax season. Questions? Call (951) 223-1881 or visit accountistryllp.com. General information only β€” not tax advice. Talk to your CPA about your situation.

Starting tomorrow (Oct 1), the IRS can automatically open a Trump Account for your child β€” and if they were born between 2025 and 2028, there's a one-time $1,000 Treasury deposit on the table. πŸ’°

Here's what most parents will miss: the account may be auto-created under the new Treasury/IRS temporary rules (T.D. 10056), but the $1,000 is NOT automatic. A parent or guardian still has to claim the account, verify identity, and elect the deposit. Once claimed, you can add up to $5,000 a year and everything grows tax-deferred until your child turns 18.

The rules project 60M+ kids auto-enrolled this year. Don't leave free money unclaimed.

5 bookkeeping mistakes that quietly cost small business owners money πŸ’Έ

Most take minutes to fix β€” and every one shows up at tax time.

πŸ’‘ Takeaway: separate your accounts, reconcile your books monthly, and keep every receipt. The IRS requires records backing every deduction you claim (IRS Publication 583).
