In a newly released fact sheet, ED directly addressed how nursing programs will be classified under the new graduate loan limits.
Under the Act, certain graduate programs—such as Medicine (M.D.), Dentistry (D.D.S./D.M.D.), Law (J.D./L.L.B.), and a handful of other high-cost degrees—will qualify for a higher federal loan limit of $200,000. All other graduate and doctoral programs, including nursing, will fall under a $100,000 limit.

This distinction alarmed many nurses and nursing students, but the Department emphasized that the terminology is purely administrative.

In response to concerns that the change reflects how the Trump Administration views the profession, ED wrote:

“The definition of a ‘professional degree’ is an internal definition used by the Department to distinguish among programs that qualify for higher loan limits, not a value judgement about the importance of programs.”
“It has no bearing on whether a program is professional in nature or not.”

Maximizing Deductions & Protecting Your Tax Home as a Travel Nurse

Did you know that working 1099 gigs at your primary residence and claimed tax home can help you legally maximize deductions while reinforcing your tax home status? By accepting per-diem or PRN work in your tax home area, you establish frequent and ongoing economic ties, a key factor in maintaining your tax home for IRS purposes.

In addition to reducing your risk of losing tax-free stipends, 1099 work opens up additional deductions, such as home office expenses, mileage, work-related supplies, and a portion of your phone and internet costs. These can significantly lower your self-employment tax, putting more money back in your pocket.

Navigating the complexities of tax home status and deductions requires expert guidance. That’s where TravelNurseTaxPros.com comes in! Our experienced team understands the unique tax challenges of travel nurses and can help ensure you maximize your return while staying compliant.
