As everyone knows I try to stay out of political issues as much as possible for my business. But there are sometimes something comes along that I just have to cry "FOUL" on. The Missouri Amendments 4 and 5 are that cry of FOUL to our legislators and Governor.

Thank you all for your consideration on these issues and I'll go back to my normal postulation now.

GET OUT AND VOTE. ITS WHAT MAKES OUR DEMOCRACY WORK.

I hope everyone remembers to vote on Missouri Amendments 4 and 5 next week. The day to vote is August 4, 2026. These 2 Amendments were originally supposed to be voted on in November. But, OUR Governor decided to move them to the August ballot because he thought it would be easier to get them to pass because FEWER Missouri citizens voted in the August elections. Show him he is wrong and vote NO on Amendment 4 and 5. I AM.
Remember Amendment 4 will severely limit the ability of Missouri voters to get a referendum petition on a ballot and will increase the risk of a voter driven referendum FAILING to become law in our State. It removes more of our ability to actually have a voice in our State Government.
Remember Amendment 5 over a 5 year period will reduce the Missouri Income Tax to zero and supposedly will reduce the county property taxes. BUT, to make up the revenue shortfall that will come about from this other taxes will probably have to be raised or implemented. This could produce a shortfall of about 25% in the state budget and either spending will have to be drastically cut (which I do not see happening) or other tax revenue will have to be added.
Remember DO WE TRUST OUR LEGISLATORS ENOUGH TO GIVE THEM THIS MUCH POWER OVER OUR HARD EARNED MONEY AND OUR LIVES.
IF NOT then vote NO on both Amendments.

Sorry this is so long but once you research the outcome of this bill it “kind of” makes a person upset. On Amendment 5 if the voters in Missouri pass this, it will do away with the Missouri Income Tax as it reduces over several years to zero and replace it with a higher Sales Tax rate. This sounds all well and good. Except that for 2024 the Missouri Income Tax was over 32% of General Revenue and the Missouri Sales Tax was about 10.4% of the Missouri General Revenue. Another source of Revenue will have to be found to keep from cutting the State budget. But; what actually is going to happen is that we (the taxpayers) of Missouri are going to give the Missouri legislators OUR APPROVAL to go ahead and raise the current sales tax rate and to replace the Income Tax over the next 5 years. Apparently; though, any sales tax exemption voted prior to January 1, 2015 supposedly is supposed to still be exempt from sales tax. All at their "whim" and we the voters will have no say in this tax increase. All this will ONLY aid the roughly 175,000 Millionaires and Billionaires who reside in Missouri. The rest of the Missouri population will pick up the burden of increased other taxes without the state income tax.
Currently under Missouri Law if the state legislature wants to increase any current sales tax rate for the State or charge sales tax on a new item (say automobile repair labor or childcare) they have to go to us; THE VOTERS for approval to make this happen. But, under this Amendment 5 a Yes vote allows them to raise the current Missouri Sales Tax to REPLACE the eliminated Income Tax.
Currently California has a base sales tax rate of 7.25% (which is the highest in the USA) and Missouri’s base sales tax rate is 4.225%. ( #38 in the USA). That’s only a 3.03% difference and I wonder if we won’t end up with over a 7.25% sales tax rate making us the highest sales tax in the USA.
YOU the TAXPAYER are not gaining anything from this Amendment. YOU WILL spend more on this increased sales tax than you did with the Income Tax Do you want to give the Missouri Legislature and Governor that much authority and control over WE THE VOTERS OF MISSOURI.

On Amendment 4 by just looking on the Missouri Secretary of States website I found out that currently to get an initiative petition proposal started to go on the Missouri ballot you currently have to get a minimum of 106,384 voter signatures in 6 of the 8 Congressional Districts to start a ballot issue to amend a state statute (law) and 170,215 to amend the state Constitution. Now if I understand correctly the legislature want to change this to require more signatures on an initiative petition AND once it is on the ballot if 5% of the voters in only one Congressional District voted NO on this future ballot issue that issue would NOT become law even though the rest of the voters in the other Congressional Districts passed the ballot issue. Essentially, we the voters will have no rights to run an initiative petition in Missourri anymore.
