Additional tax changes - if you have enough medical expenses to deduct - PPE (personal protective equipment) for the primary purpose of preventing the spread of coronavirus are deductible medical expenses. This includes but is not limited to masks, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, etc.

There are changes to 2020 taxes that you need to know about. The Rescue bill that was passed by the House yesterday and should be signed into law on Friday changes how unemployment will be taxed retroactive to 2020.

What this means for you is that if you received unemployment in 2020 and have not filed your returns you may want to wait. The act makes the first $10,200 in unemployment received tax free for taxpayers making less $150,000/yr. Once this bill is officially signed into law we will have to wait for official guidance and software updates.

You are responsible for what goes on your return even if you hire a professional. Be sure that you are working with a reputable tax preparer and that they put their information in the paid preparer section of the return. You have the right (and should) review your return before you sign the efile forms, if you don't understand something ask questions.

IR-2021-30, February 5, 2021 — The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers to avoid “ghost” tax return preparers whose refusal to sign returns can cause a frightening array of problems.

01/15/2021

The IRS just announced that tax season will begin on February 12th. This means that no efiles will be processed until that date.

This delay is caused by the legislation passed by Congress on December 27th which included tax law changes.

Don't wait to get your information in with the delayed start to efiling accounting and tax firms are going to be extremely busy and waiting to provide your information will lead to longer waits to get your return completed.

Information on the stimulus payments is in and the IRS will be going by your 2018 or 2019 tax return. They will be putting up a website were you can enter direct deposit information if you have not provided that on your return. You can find out more information at

IR-2020-61, March 30, 2020 — The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service today announced that distribution of economic impact payments will begin in the next three weeks and will be distributed automatically, with no action required for most people.

03/29/2020

There's still no information posted on how the stimulus checks will be distributed (only speculation). I can promise you that the IRS will NOT call or text for your bank account information. Don't be a victim, don't fall for it.

ATTN: ALL GA EMPLOYERS from the GA Dept. of Labor:

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) has adopted an emergency Rule 300-2-4-0.5 Partial Claims (https://dol.georgia.gov/document/gdol-rules/certification-administrative-rules-filed-secretary-state-03-16-20/download), effective March 16, 2020. The rule mandates all Georgia employers to file partial claims online on behalf of their employees for any week during which an employee (full-time/part-time) works less than full-time due to a partial or total company shutdown caused by the COVID-19 public health emergency. Any employer found to be in violation of this rule will be required to reimburse GDOL for the full amount of unemployment insurance benefits paid to the employee. Download the How Employers File Partial Claims Desk-Aid found on the GDOL Alert Page and follow the step-by-step instructions (https://dol.georgia.gov/document/document/how-employers-file-partial-claims/download).

Filing partial claims results in your employees receiving unemployment insurance (UI) benefit payments faster, usually within 48 hours for claims filed electronically. Employees for whom you file a partial claim are NOT required to report to a Georgia Department of Labor career center, register for employment services, or look for other work.

Please continue to monitor our website at gdol.ga.gov for any updates to these guidelines.
