New W-2 Changes You Need to Know Before Tax Season

Listen up, because your 2026 W-2 may look a little different when it arrives for the 2027 filing season.

The IRS has added new reporting areas designed to identify certain income that may qualify for new tax deductions. Here’s what I want you to look for:

Box 12, Code TT — Qualified Overtime
If you received qualifying overtime pay, your employer will report the qualified overtime amount using Code TT. Remember, this generally represents the premium portion above your regular rate, not your entire overtime paycheck.

Box 12, Code TP — Cash Tips
Employees who receive qualifying cash tips may see Code TP, showing the cash tips reported to their employer. Tips are still income and are generally still subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Box 14 has changed.
The 2026 W-2 now separates Box 14 into 14a and 14b. Box 14b is specifically used for the new Treasury Tipped Occupation Code for employees receiving reported tips.

And here is the part I really want you to remember:

Seeing an amount on your W-2 does not automatically mean that entire amount is deductible. Your eligibility, income, filing status, occupation, and other limitations still matter.

This tax season, don’t just grab your W-2 and look at Box 1 and your withholding. Review the entire form.

Hello July.

I see so many new faces here, so I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Nedra, and I am the CEO and founder of Visionary Tax Biz.

I’m a mother, grandmother, nurse, entrepreneur, lupus warrior, and someone who believes that every obstacle I’ve faced has prepared me to help someone else.

I didn’t build Visionary Tax Biz just to prepare tax returns. I built it to educate, empower, and help people understand their taxes with confidence.

Too many people file their taxes every year without understanding what they’re signing, what deductions they’re missing, or how to prepare for the future. My mission is to change that.

I work with individuals, families, nurses, small business owners, hairstylists, independent contractors, rideshare drivers, and everyday hardworking people who want more than just someone to file their taxes. They want someone who will explain, guide, and help them make informed financial decisions.

Education is at the heart of everything I do because I believe knowledge creates confidence.

This year, Visionary Tax Biz is growing. I’m expanding the services I offer so I can help my clients beyond tax season and become a greater resource for their businesses and financial success.
