Hiring an independent contractor? Collect their completed Form W-9 before issuing the first payment.

It’s much easier to obtain the contractor’s correct name, tax classification, address, and taxpayer identification number while you’re actively working together—not months later when it’s time to prepare 1099s.

A simple step now can prevent a major January headache!

For sole proprietors and single-member LLCs, paying yourself is generally recorded as an owner’s draw—not a business expense.

Categorizing those withdrawals incorrectly can distort your profit-and-loss statement and make your financial reports less useful. Clean books mean you can actually trust your numbers.

❓ Ask an Accountant

One of the questions I hear all the time is:

“Can I deduct my cell phone?”

The answer is yes—if you use it for business. You can generally deduct the business-use portion of your cell phone expenses. The key is keeping good records to support the deduction.

Every business is different, so what applies to one business owner may not apply to another. When in doubt, ask before you file.
