📚 Education Tax Credits

There are two main education credits available:

1️⃣ American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)
• Up to $2,500 per eligible student
• Available for the first four years of higher education
• Student must be pursuing a degree or recognized credential
• Partially refundable – up to $1,000 may be refunded

2️⃣ Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)
• Up to $2,000 per tax return per year
• Available for all years of post-secondary education
• Can be used for job skill improvement courses
• Unlimited number of years

📌 Taxpayers can claim either AOTC or LLC — but not both in the same year.
To claim these credits, Form 8863 (Education Credits) must be filed with your federal tax return.

💰 Education-Related Deduction

Student Loan Interest Deduction
• Deduct up to $2,500 in student loan interest paid
• Available if income is $85,000 – $100,000 (or $170,000 – $200,000 for joint filers)

Education can be a great investment in your future — and these tax benefits can help make it more affordable.

Missing W-2 or 1099-R? Here’s What To Do

Still waiting on your Form W-2 or Form 1099-R?

If you haven’t received your form by February 2, 2026, or the information on it is incorrect, here’s what to do:

✅ Step 1: Contact your employer or payer immediately.
✅ Step 2: If you still don’t receive a corrected copy by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

📌 When calling the IRS, have ready:
• Your full name, address, ZIP code, birthdate & SSN/ITIN
• Employer/payer’s name, address & EIN (if available)

The IRS will contact your employer and may send you Form 4852 (Substitute W-2 or 1099-R) with instructions.

If you must file before receiving the corrected form, you can use Form 4852 and estimate your income and withholdings.

⚠️ Important:
If you later receive the correct form and it’s different from your estimate, you’ll need to file Form 1040-X (Amended Return).

🚨 Common Tax Return Mistakes to Avoid in 2026 🚨

Mistakes happen — but many tax return errors are easily avoidable. Before filing your federal income tax return, always review it carefully for accuracy and completeness.

👉 Even if someone else prepares your return, it’s ultimately your responsibility to ensure everything is correct.

Here are some common mistakes to watch out for:

🔹 Filing Too Soon
Make sure you’ve received all tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, etc.) before filing. You can verify tax records through your IRS Online Account.

🔹 Incorrect Filing Status
Choose only one filing status — and make sure it’s the right one. Your filing status impacts your tax rate, credits, and deductions.

🔹 Inaccurate Income Reporting
Carefully enter all wages, dividends, bank interest, and other income exactly as reported on your tax documents.

🔹 Misspelled Names or Missing SSNs
Names and Social Security Numbers must match exactly as they appear on Social Security cards. Even small errors can delay processing.

🔹 Credits & Deductions Errors
There are new deductions and changes to certain credits for 2026. Make sure calculations are correct and you have proper documentation.

🔹 Unsigned Returns
An unsigned return is invalid. For joint returns, both spouses must sign (unless a valid Power of Attorney applies).

🔹 Incorrect Bank Information
Double-check routing and account numbers when choosing direct deposit. One small typo can delay your refund.

📑 Why keep old tax records?

They’re often needed for future tax filings, loan applications, or income verification.

Taxpayers can access prior-year information by:
• Logging into their Online Account
• Contacting their tax preparer or software provider
• Requesting a free transcript from the IRS

Planning ahead makes tax season smoother.
