IRS to send stimulus payments via Prepaid Debit Cards

Another round of stimulus payments is going out to U.S. residents. This time they are showing up in mailboxes in the form of a prepaid debit card.

The letter with the prepaid debit card is from The Money Network Cardholder Services.

The IRS announced they're sending the Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) by prepaid debit card, instead of by paper check. With the cards, you can make purchases, get cash from in-network ATMs, and transfer funds to your personal bank account without incurring any fees. The cards must be activated by phone or online before they can be used.

You'll also be able to check your card balance online, by phone or through the mobile app without fees.

According to the IRS, the card, which is free, has protections against fraud, loss and other errors.

You'll still need to check your mail. This week, MetaBank will start sending out the card and information on how to activate and use it.

You can check on the status of your payment using this tool on the IRS website.

If you have questions, you can still call (800) 919-9835.

The good news is if your card gets lost or stolen, it can be replaced. You can call 1-800-240-8100 or click here for more information. Information on card replacement fees can be found here.

05/11/2020

Haven't received your stimulus payment yet? There is another round being sent out on May 13th.

If you don't get it on May 13th, please don't worry!

They are working as fast as they can to get them all paid out. You will get yours eventually!

Reemployment Assistance Benefits

Refusal to Return to Work

Summary

Workers who have been placed on a temporary layoff related to COVID-19 but refuse to return to work when recalled by their employer will lose unemployment benefits, except for certain circumstances.

These exceptions include the following and may require documentation:

If you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and are experiencing symptoms

If you have recovered but it caused medical complications making you unable to perform essential job duties

If a member of your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19

If you are providing care for a member of your household who was diagnosed with COVID-19

If you do not have childcare due to COVID-19 reasons

If you do not have transportation to your place of work because of COVID-19

NOTE: Being uncomfortable about returning to work when recalled is not an acceptable circumstance to decline work.

Not returning to work when there is available work could be considered a “refusal of work” or “voluntary quit” and potentially disqualify claimants from receiving reemployment assistance (unemployment insurance) benefits, including the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation benefit of $600/weekly.

Workers

Workers in any of these scenarios are strongly encouraged to work with their employer to determine the best way to handle the situation to return to work.

Claimants should not cancel their claims. Instead, leave the claim open and do not file a weekly request for payment, in case you are laid off again.

A worker who is recalled on a part-time basis may continue to be eligible for partial benefits depending on the amount of wages earned. Continue filing weekly claims and report the gross wages earned each week.

The self-employed should continue to report their weekly net income and self-certify the reason they are not working as part of their continuing claims as they return to work.

Economic Impact Payment Information:
Do you need to take action? See Below!

People who filed a tax return for 2019 or 2018

No additional action is needed by taxpayers who:

have already filed their tax returns this year for 2019. The IRS will use this information to calculate the payment amount.
haven’t filed yet for 2019 but filed a 2018 federal tax return. For these taxpayers the IRS will use their information from 2018 tax filings to make the Economic Impact Payment calculations.
People who aren't typically required to file a tax return

Social Security and Railroad Retirement recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 and Form RRB-1099 to generate Economic Impact Payments of $1,200 to these individuals even if they did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. Recipients will receive these payments as a direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their benefits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients are also part of this group who don't need to take action.

For Social Security, Railroad retirees and SSDI who have qualifying children, they can take an additional step to receive $500 per qualifying child.

There are other individuals such as low-income workers and certain veterans and individuals with disabilities who aren’t required to file a tax return, but they are still eligible for the Economic Impact Payments. Taxpayers can check the IRS.gov tool - Do I Need to File a Tax Return? - to see if they have a filing requirement.

If you don’t have to file, use the "Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here" application to provide simple information so you can get your payment.
