Working overtime this year? Keep your pay statements.

The federal deduction for qualified overtime generally covers the extra premium above your regular pay rate, such as the extra half in time-and-a-half. It does not cover every dollar earned during overtime hours.

The pay must meet federal eligibility rules, and income limits and other restrictions apply. Social Security and Medicare taxes are not eliminated by this deduction.

Most LLC owners are leaving money on the table every single month — not because they're doing anything wrong, but because nobody told them there's a better way to pay themselves.

Here's how it actually works.

Your EIN comes first. Every dollar the business earns goes into a dedicated business account — never mixed with personal funds. Commingling exposes your personal assets and creates legal headaches you do not want.

You pay yourself through an owner's draw. Transfer from business to personal, document every transaction — date, amount, purpose. Simple. Clean. Protected.

Now the part most people miss: a 15.3% self-employment tax sits on top of your regular income tax. It is not optional and it grows as your business does. Leave enough in the account to cover it. Do not withdraw everything too soon.

When the business gets more profitable, that 15.3% becomes a serious number. That is when you look at S-Corp status. Pay yourself a reasonable salary. Take the rest as distributions. Payroll tax only hits the salary — not the distributions.

Same income. Better structure. Significantly lower tax bill.
