This week, let us introduce you to Deb Ann Jackson - our main office receptionist and the one who keeps the Decatur office running smoothly - tax season or not.

If you've come by our Decatur office, she's the warm face that greets you, and she's always ready to help our clients and staff with whatever tasks need attention.

The accounting world has changed a lot in the last 75 years. When Wear Howell began in 1951, tax returns were simpler - and done entirely by hand. Even the standard deduction looked different, calculated from AGI instead of the fixed amounts we use today.

Common tax mistakes are just that - common.

When you are running a business, you are always wanting to look at ways to save money and relieve tax burdens as best you can.

Depreciation is an annual income tax deduction that allows you to recover the cost or other basis of certain property over the time you use the property. It is an allowance for the wear and tear, deterioration, or obsolescence of the property.

Section 179 lets businesses take a big upfront tax deduction instead of spreading it out over time, which can lower taxes sooner.

Key things to know:
📍It's for business-use assets (not personal items)
📍The asset must be placed in service during the year (not just purchased)
📍There are annual limits on how much you can deduct
📍The deduction can't exceed your business income (you generally can't use it to create a loss).
