Using AI to help with your taxes?

The illusion of authority

The most concerning aspect of AI-generated tax advice is not its existence, but its convincing facade of professionalism.

The problem, however, is that AI systems do not actually understand tax law — they predict language patterns.

Accountants are no longer just educating clients about tax law, but actively dismantling AI-generated fiction before it turns into audit-triggering liability.

During the 2026 filing season, the IRS implemented Executive Order 14247, which generally directs federal agencies to transition toward electronic payments to improve security and reduce fraud. While more taxpayers received refunds via direct deposit, many—such as unbanked, lower-income, elderly, and overseas taxpayers—faced challenges accessing this option.

The EO allows for exceptions when electronic payments aren't feasible, but the IRS did not establish clear procedures, leading to confusion and refund delays of 6 weeks or more. As of April 27, about 4 million notices were sent for returns lacking valid direct deposit info, instructing taxpayers to update their details online or request a paper check waiver. However, most taxpayers do not have online accounts, and critical waiver information was missing from the notices. https://ow.ly/ylCC50ZftxI

For the last 3 years, TAS has reported on “unconscionable” IRS delays in resolving identity theft cases, which often require taxpayers to wait nearly 2 years to receive their refunds. At the end of the filing season, more than half a million cases were pending in inventory. For many taxpayers these delays cause serious financial hardship and frustration.
