Moving abroad does not always end your state tax obligations. Some states may continue to treat former residents as taxpayers until they can clearly show that residency and domicile ties were actually broken.
Things like keeping a home, driver’s license, voter registration, bank relationships, or other connections can all matter depending on the state.
If you moved overseas, it is worth reviewing whether your former state could still expect a return.
Expatriate Tax Returns can help you understand both federal and state filing requirements while living abroad.

Three common expat tax myths can lead to missed filings, reporting problems, or unnecessary stress.

Paying tax where you live does not automatically eliminate your U.S. filing requirement. Foreign account balances can trigger FBAR reporting when the combined total exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year. And if you are behind on past returns, there may still be options to catch up.

The rules can be complicated, but getting the facts right makes a big difference.
Expatriate Tax Returns can help you understand what applies to your situation and stay compliant.

Getting paid through PayPal, Stripe, YouTube, Upwork, or another online platform while living abroad?

Your freelance, creator, or online business income may still need to be reported on your U.S. tax return, even if you earn it overseas.

Payment platforms may issue Form 1099, and the IRS may receive a copy. Properly reporting your income, claiming eligible business deductions, and reviewing available foreign income exclusions can help you stay compliant.

Expatriate Tax Returns helps Americans abroad navigate self-employment taxes, 1099 reporting, foreign income, and business deductions.

Buying, selling, or renting property abroad? Your U.S. tax responsibilities may follow you.

For Americans living overseas, foreign real estate can create additional tax considerations, including rental income, deductible expenses, capital gains, and even currency exchange gains when selling.

Whether you own a vacation home in Italy or investment property elsewhere, understanding what needs to be reported can help you avoid costly mistakes.

Expatriate Tax Returns helps Americans abroad navigate foreign property tax reporting with confidence.

Foreign investments can create unexpected U.S. tax reporting issues for Americans abroad.

Many non-U.S. mutual funds and ETFs may be treated as PFICs, which can lead to complex reporting, additional tax calculations, and Form 8621 requirements. Foreign assets may also trigger Form 8938 reporting depending on your totals.

Before filing, make sure your foreign funds, accounts, and investments are reviewed correctly.

Expatriate Tax Returns can help you understand what needs to be reported and file with confidence.

Married to a non-American while living abroad?

Your U.S. tax return may need extra review. Filing separately or jointly can change what gets reported, how income is handled, and what tax outcome applies.

A second passport does not cancel your U.S. tax responsibilities.

Many dual citizens and “accidental Americans” are still required to file a U.S. tax return each year, even if they live abroad, earn income overseas, and pay taxes in another country.

Foreign accounts, pensions, property, investments, and business income may all need to be reviewed as part of one U.S. return.

Not sure what applies to you? Expatriate Tax Returns can help you get compliant with confidence.

Giving up your US citizenship requires five years of full tax compliance and can trigger an exit tax on unrealized gains, making meticulous long term planning essential.

Living in Singapore offers low local tax rates and no capital gains tax, but without a comprehensive US tax treaty, American expats must carefully structure their investment income to prevent unexpected IRS liabilities.
