Y’all, I’m just so dang proud of this girl! I know I talk about her often, but the amount of conversations we’ve had about business, friendship, and making sure the foundation of our friendship always stays secure honestly amazes me.

I’m sitting here today drinking my coffee out of her company’s cup (like I do often) and it just gives me the warm fuzzies and puts a smile on my face to see her business logo alongside mine.

So often people look at someone in the same industry as competition, but for us it’s the complete opposite. We support each other, refer people back and forth when someone fits the other’s niche better, share ideas, and never feel like one person’s success takes away from the other’s.

She truly is one of the best, and I’m beyond grateful to have her in my corner.

What is a tax planner?

Every year there are clients I speak to who owed more in taxes than they expected. Nothing had gone wrong on those returns but there was a missing piece of the plan. April is when you find out the final results, but the time to finalize the plan is between September through December.

A tax planning meeting is how we finalize the plan together, 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 April.

Here's what it involves. I take your income so far this year, what you expect for the rest of it, and the rest of the picture on your return, which includes your spouse's withholding, your other income, your deductions, and your credits. Then I run it forward to a projected number for the year. That's your likely balance due or refund, based on where you actually are rather than using old information.

The number itself is only half of it. The other half is what it lets you ask.

Are you withholding enough? Are your estimated payments covering your liability? Is there equipment or a purchase you were planning for January anyway? Are there tools available to ethically reduce your liability that fit your situation?

Most of those questions have a deadline of December 31st. A few, like adjusting withholding, work better the earlier in the year you get to them. Some years the projection comes back without needing you to make changes, and you go into filing season with confidence.

Sometimes you just have to try the thing…

Worst case? You learn something.

In this case… I learned that I may not have a future career in dog grooming 😬😂

But hey — hair grows back! Thankfully lol

Business is a lot like that too. Not every new idea is going to be perfect. Sometimes you try something, adjust, laugh at yourself a little, and keep going.

So here’s your Sunday reminder from me (and my slightly questionable grooming skills)… try the thing!

Two years! 😳

Opening a brick-and-mortar accounting office right here in my hometown of Delton and serving small businesses has been a goal of mine since high school. Now, after 20 years in the accounting industry, two years in business for myself, and a building to call home, I am blessed to be able to do what I love everyday!

To every client who has trusted me with their books, every person who has referred someone my way, shared a post, stopped into the office, encouraged me, or simply cheered Maple Arrow on — thank you! Truly.

Pretty special to look back at how far this little dream has come! Because of that I am beyond excited for all that comes next!

Welp… here’s to another trip around the sun! 🎉

It’s my birthday, and looking back at where I was last year compared to where I am today… a LOT can change in 365 days!

One thing I’ve learned about myself? I thrive in the uncomfortable. Trying something new, saying yes when I’m a little nervous, walking into a room where I don’t know anyone, taking the chance — that’s usually where the best things happen.

So this year, instead of just wishing me a happy birthday, celebrate with me by doing something new!

Try a restaurant you’ve never been to.
Walk into that local shop you always drive past.
Take a different hiking trail.
Sign up for something.
Go somewhere alone.
Do the thing that makes you just a little uncomfortable.

And then come back here and show me!

You see the spot, don’t you?!

A perfectly clean shirt with ONE little spot on it…

…and somehow, that’s the only thing we can see.

We do the same thing in business.

One bad month.
One mistake.
One expense that got out of hand.
One number on the P&L we don’t like.

And suddenly it feels like everything is going wrong.

But what about the rest of the shirt?

The revenue that grew.
The debt you paid down.
The customers who keep coming back.
The months you made payroll.
The decisions you got RIGHT.

Your numbers should absolutely show us where the spots are — because sometimes they need attention.

But good accounting also helps you step back far enough to see the whole shirt.

Don’t let one spot make you forget how much is still clean!

Sometimes perspective is just as important as the numbers 🙂
