Jonathan has been with our firm longer than anyone except founding partner Matt Juffer! In fact, he started when we were still printing tax returns on paper—yeesh! Jonathan has been a Senior Manager since July 2019 and works primarily with individuals, partnerships, and corporations.

"The relationships that are formed are the best part of HJA. I have developed strong relationships with clients, other professionals, and coworkers that go beyond just the scope of providing tax services. The ability to work with people in all different sorts of tax situations—from the simple to the incredibly complex—has made no two days exactly the same in all my years working here."

In his free time, Jonathan enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters (ages 4 and 1). 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 You can find them at the zoo or the park enjoying the great outdoors. 🌳☀️ (Jonathan also enjoys playing golf when time permits.) 🏌️⛳️

FUN FACT: In order to pay off all his college debt, Jonathan only ate peanut butter and honey sandwiches for lunch at work for the first couple of years! 🥜🍯

Don’t let Walker’s age fool you—he is the honorary “grumpy old man” of our office! 👴 After graduating with a Master of Accounting degree, he joined our firm in 2014 as a staff accountant and is currently a Tax Manager.

"I enjoy our 'small firm' setting while working with 'big firm' clients. It allows me to use my technical skills while also requiring me to think 'big picture' about complex issues."

In his free time, Walker loves spending time with his wife, Kelsey, and their two children. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 He also enjoys just about anything outdoors. 🌳☀️

FUN FACTS: Walker’s favorite TV show is The Office and he does NOT have a brother named Texas Ranger! 🤣

Susan joined our firm as an intern in February 2012 and has been with us ever since! She is currently a Tax Manager and works primarily with individuals, trusts, partnerships, and corporations.

"I enjoy HJA because of the people I work with and the clients we serve. Over the last 10 years it has been great to work together to help our clients meet their various goals while building lasting relationships. I appreciate the fact that there are never two clients who are exactly the same."

In her free time, Susan enjoys spending time with her husband and new 4-month-old baby boy. 👶 Together they enjoy going outside for walks 🚶‍♀️, exploring new parks 🌳, and finding the best breakfast places in town ☀️. (The best eggs benedict Susan has ever had were in St. Augustine Beach!) 🏖

FUN FACT: Susan was the captain of the Drake University Women's Rowing Team during her senior year and the team won Drake's first ever conference championship! 🚣‍♀️

Zach joined HJA as an intern in 2011 and has been the heart of our team ever since. As the impromptu social chair, Zach has organized and participated in many fun events over the years such as staff wing nights, the HJA staff holiday card, and . Zach also serves as the office therapist during the depths of busy season. 🗣

"The aspect that I enjoy the most about HJA is the people I work with. My peer group here at HJA are intelligent and talented and it has been a lot of fun over the last decade to get to know them."

In his free time, Zach enjoys nature walks 🌿, maintaining his backyard butterfly gardens 🦋, and spending time with beautiful wife Emily 👰. (Zach was recently married in June so he realizes he needs to score points where he can, even in work spotlight posts.) Zach also spends a lot of time wrestling and cuddling with his dog Lyanna. 🐾

FUN FACT
Zach ended up interning at HJA for two reasons:
1.) Jonathan Rector, our Senior Manager, was Zach's RA.
2.) HJA was giving away Pro-V1 golf balls at the Drake University Career Fair. $5 golf balls were definitely not in Zach's college budget at the time! 🏌️⛳️

When you visit our office, you're more than likely to be greeted by Collin, our administrative assistant extraordinaire!

Collin joined the team in August 2021 in preparation of Linda's retirement and Jackie's promotion to office manager. He has been an essential part of HJA ever since!

"My favorite aspect of my job is the people I work with. Everyone treats me with respect, nobody treats me like a mindless kid, the managers and the partners trust me, and everyone has a good understanding of when a good time to chat is and when a bad time to chat is. And most of all, I am constantly reminded of how I am valued and appreciated."

In his free time, Collin enjoys hunting, gaming, and spending time with his girlfriend and their pup. 🐾

Fun fact: playing video games (specifically RuneScape) is what got Collin typing over 80 words per minute! ⌨️

Hamilton Juffer + Associates llp currently has part-time spring and full-time fall internship opportunities available. These internships provide an introduction to public accounting and the responsibilities normally assumed by a tax associate. Interns have the opportunity to work on business tax returns, trust tax returns, individual tax returns, and research projects regarding taxation.

HJA specializes in tax planning and compliance and has an outstanding client base of corporations, partnerships, individuals, trusts, and non-profits. All of our partners were previously employed by a “Big 4” accounting firm, so we are uniquely positioned to work on large-firm issues in a small-firm environment.

Candidates must be accounting majors. Expectations include above average written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, successful problem-solving and analytical skills, and the ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure.

We value ability, consistency, and integrity. The right candidates will be proactive, resourceful, and client service oriented.
