Most people know you need 40 Social Security credits to qualify for retirement benefits, but 40 credits do not determine how much your monthly check will be. 💰
Social Security generally calculates your retirement benefit using your highest 35 years of earnings. If you worked fewer than 35 years, years with no covered earnings can count as $0, which may lower your benefit.
And there’s a limit to how much of your earnings count each year. For 2026, the Social Security taxable maximum is $184,500.
So when it comes to your retirement benefit, your earnings history matters, not just how many credits you have.
