πŸ“’ The IRS's free Direct File tool is expanding to more states for 2026.

The catch? It's built for simple returns only β€” W-2 income, standard deductions.

Own a business? Have rental income? Itemize? You're still better off with a pro who knows the rules.

Free is great β€” when it fits. When it doesn't, that's what we're here for. πŸ’Ό

🚨 The 20% pass-through deduction isn't going anywhere.

For years, business owners have been told to "use it before it sunsets." That clock just stopped.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made Section 199A permanent β€” and added a new $400 minimum deduction for owners with at least $1,000 of qualified business income.

What that actually means for you: βœ… You can finally plan past 2025 βœ… Smaller operators now qualify for a deduction βœ… Entity structure decisions just got more valuable, not less ⚠️ Service businesses β€” your income phase-outs are still there

If you haven't revisited your entity structure since the TCJA, now's the time. The rules changed. Your strategy should too.

Amazon doesn't employ its delivery drivers. About 4,500 small businesses do β€” on paper.

That "on paper" is carrying a lot of weight. Those DSP owners pay the employer-side payroll taxes, the workers' comp, and the wage claims. Amazon controls the routes, the quotas, the uniforms, and the pay.

And now it's not just one city. The Teamsters are organizing DSP drivers facility by facility nationwide. New Jersey is suing Amazon over driver misclassification. A nationwide class action is moving through California. New York and Chicago are writing bills that other cities are already copying.

Here's the part nobody says out loud: for DSP owners, this is a tax story, not a labor story.

β†’ The employer-side payroll taxes you've been paying follow the contract β€” and so does the liability if the classification gets reversed. β†’ Misclassification is enforced state by state. Winning in one state doesn't protect you in the next one. β†’ Amazon's playbook when drivers organize is to cancel the DSP contract. Nearly 500 Queens drivers found that out the hard way.

If you run a DSP, the question isn't what happens in New York. It's whether your entity structure, your records, and your reserves survive this going national.

Clean classification documentation. Real reserves. Revenue that isn't one contract.

That's the conversation to have before the audit letter, not after.

New Jersey just made the 1099 delivery driver model illegal.

On October 1, the state's new ABC test rules went live β€” and there are zero industry exemptions.

Here's what that actually means:

If you run a P&D operation with 1099 drivers, you can no longer argue contractor status just because they signed an agreement and file their own taxes. Under New Jersey's test, a worker has to pass all three prongs β€” and delivery drivers fail the second one almost automatically, because delivery is your usual course of business.

The exposure: back payroll taxes, workers' comp, unemployment insurance, and overtime β€” with multi-year lookback, penalties, and interest.

And here's the part nobody's talking about: New Jersey did this through agency rulemaking, not legislation. That means other state labor departments can copy the template without ever needing a floor vote. Over 1 million New Jersey workers are affected. Scale that to a dozen states and you're talking tens of millions.

Two carveout bills have been introduced. Neither one covers trucking.

If you have 1099 drivers in the NY/NJ metro, Q4 is your last window to restructure before the tax year closes. Waiting until January means paying for a problem you could have fixed.

We're tracking this state by state. If you want to know where your operation stands, let's talk before December 31.

πŸ’Ό The IRS just started implementing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act β€” and its quietly rewriting the business law playbook. Most lawyers heard the headlines when the bill passed last July. But the real story is happening now, as the IRS turns the statute into working rules β€” and it's changing how you should be advising clients on deals, entities, and ownership transitions. Here's what's actually shifting:1. The corporate tax rate is permanent. The 21% rate is no longer a moving target. That removes a huge variable from the C-corp vs. pass-through decision β€” and it means clients who deferred restructuring because of rate uncertainty may now be ready to revisit their entity structure.2. Estate and gift exemptions are locked in. The larger TCJA-era exemptions are permanent, so there's no more racing a 2025 cliff. That changes the conversation around succession planning, buy-sell agreements, and moving equity to the next generation β€” and it's worth having now while the rules are favorable.3. The SALT cap increase changes the owner math. The state and local tax deduction cap rises to $40,400 for certain taxpayers(up from $10,000), before reverting in 2030. For owners and partners in high-tax states, that reshapes how they want income and deductions allocated β€” compensation vs. distributions is suddenly a bigger conversation.4. New deductions mean new questions. The act adds deductions for tips, overtime, and senior income. That's more eligibility questions from clients, more documentation to track, and a need to refresh your intake process. The bottom line: the IRSs 2026–2027 Priority Guidance Plan is out, and more regulations are dropping in real time. The firms that track this guidance now will be advising clients ahead of the curve. The ones that wait? They'll be scrambling at filing time. Is your practice ready for the new baseline? Reach out to us at InteractiveAccountants.com β€” happy to talk through how this affects your clients. πŸ‘‡
