One of the major concerns I have observed in recent years is the improper completion of W4 forms, resulting in inadequate tax payments throughout the year and, in some instances, excessive payments. 🚨🚨🚨
✅ As a W2 employee, you have complete control over your W4 form, allowing you to declare exemptions and determine federal tax withholdings correctly. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to properly complete your W4 form:
✅Step 1 - Filing Status: Indicate whether you are Single/Married Filing Separately or Married Filing Jointly. If you prefer a higher tax rate, you can select Single/MFS even if you are married. It is not advisable to select Head of Household, as it may result in insufficient withholding.
✅Step 2 - Multiple Jobs or Spouse's Employment: If you have additional jobs or if your spouse is employed, check the box in 2c. This applies if you have more than one job and are completing the W-4 for a specific job. It also applies if your spouse has a job or if you have investment income, or if you anticipate owing taxes at the end of the year.
✅Step 3 - Dependents: I recommend entering 0 in this field (or 1 if you have 2 dependents). By doing so, more taxes will be deducted from your paycheck, ensuring that you don't underpay and owe taxes when the time comes. If you end up overpaying, you will receive a refund for the excess amount during tax time.
✅Step 4 - Other Items: I suggest entering 0 in 4a and 4b. As for 4c, it is used for additional withholding, allowing you to specify a fixed amount to be deducted from each paycheck. If you have followed the previous steps and still find yourself owing money, it might be a good idea to enter an extra amount in this box that you would like to have withheld from each payday.
🛑 If you are married, I recommend reviewing your spouse's withholdings as well‼️
