In his remarks at the central bank’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Warsh said, “While this summer’s PCE and CPI readings were better than expected, they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved.”

He also said, “We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do. That’s our job ... our mandate ... and our charge to keep.”

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh also warned that "inflation is running above our 2% target" and that "the Fed's predominant focus right now should be on prices"

Warsh did not explicitly say whether the Fed should raise its benchmark interest rate to force inflation down to its 2% annual target after more than 5 years of above-target price increases.

Kevin Warsh gave his first Jackson Hole speech as Fed chairman on Friday, and while he never said the words "rate hike," traders heard them anyway. Odds of a September increase jumped from 35% to 62% by the afternoon. We also look at a new Venezuela oil deal, Nvidia's blowout quarter, and why the jobs report this Friday may matter more than anything Warsh said.

The Treasury, however, took steps this week to artificially force the 10-, 20-, and 30-year bond rates lower by purchasing bonds in the market.

Temporary effect to push down rates, but by the middle of the week, the short reprieve in bond prices was replaced by a rally. We see the 10-year Treasury got back to 4.75 by the weekend.

Walmart Sales Drop: American Consumer Under Pressure

Walmart’s earnings report told us something about the middle-market American consumer: they are making trade-offs at the register. Those trade-offs showed up in Walmart’s revenue, and the company came in below what most investors expected on both revenue and profit for the quarter.

We read this as one data point rather than a change in direction. It is worth noting, not worth repositioning a portfolio over. We will keep watching as the situation develops.

It took just four and a half years to climb from $30 trillion to $40 trillion.

That is a remarkably short window for $10 trillion in new obligations.

Of course interest rates would react accordingly.

For anyone who is fiscally conservative, this is a real challenge. We had hoped for more progress from the Trump administration on holding down spending. The conflict in the Middle East is not helping on that front either. Spending needs to be reined in, and this week made that case more urgent than it was a month ago.

The national debt crossed $40 trillion this week, and it took just four and a half years to add the last $10 trillion of it. Meanwhile, the Fed and the Treasury spent the week moving in opposite directions on bond rates... One willing to let them rise to bring inflation down, the other buying bonds to push rates lower. Here's what that means for the overall markets.
