Happy holiday season everyone! And happy new year!
Here's some info. regarding some stimulus payments of 2021 tax year!

Check your mail — you might be receiving a stimulus payment of up to $1,400, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The checks are part of the IRS' effort to distribute around $2.4 billion to taxpayers who failed to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns, officials said.

As many as one million taxpayers are set to receive the payments, the IRS said.

“Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement.

•So when exactly can those eligible expect a payment? Here's what to know.

•When will you get a stimulus check?
According to the IRS, checks started automatically going out in December, and "should arrive in most cases by late January."

Eligible taxpayers don’t have to take any action. The automatic payments will be sent to the bank account listed on the taxpayer’s 2023 return or to the address IRS has on file.

•Who is eligible to get the stimulus check?
The IRS said most taxpayers eligible for the federal stimulus payments, formally known as Economic Impact Payments, have already received them.

The special payments announced by the IRS are being sent to those taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return but left the data field for the Recovery Rebate Credit blank or they filled it out as $0 when they were actually eligible for the credit.

•What if you haven’t filed my 2021 tax return yet?
You still might be able to receive the money. However, taxpayers need to file a tax return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by the April 15, 2025, deadline, even if any income from a job, business or other source was minimal or nonexistent, according to IRS.

We look forward to assisting you this new tax season!

Hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating the givers and nurturers of life over the weekend!

****Here's tax reminder****

The deadline to claim a refund for Tax Year 2020 is May 17 and there’s no penalty for failure to file if a refund is due.

Under federal law, taxpayers have three years to file and claim their refunds before the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury. That typically puts the deadline around tax time but, due to the COVID pandemic, the three-year window for unfiled returns for 2020 was pushed into mid-May.

We at Nellie's Income Tax Services are ready to assist with your income taxes. Call us to set up your appointment. 🗃️ 📄

Today, tax season has officially kicked off!

Although the e-filing commenced today, we have always advised our clients to delay the e-filing of your tax return.
The general recommendation is to wait till mid or better yet, late Feb. to transmit (e-file) your tax documents to both state (if applicable) and federal taxing agencies. There are tax forms that you may need but aren't quite finalized by the government. The recommendation is wait to avoid the risk of missing a tax credit and having to amend your return.

That being said please DO NOT delay the process of gathering and sharing all your tax documents and tax related info with us via our safe and secure portal. This process can be commenced now and not have to wait!

Our office is open and we are seeing our clients in person. For face to face meetings, appointments are required.
If preferred, we are also assisting remotely via our safe and secure portal where you connect with us via online with an invite link we send to your email address. This option allows you to work from the comfort of your home! Either way, we look forward to assisting you and continue to help make this process as stress-free as possible.

Thanks for checking in and we are grateful for the start of the tax season and grateful also for an end to a busy day!

TAX TIP REGARDING IRS SCAMMERS

*****Knowing how scammers pose as the IRS can help taxpayers protect themselves*****

Crooks are always looking for new ways to scam unsuspecting taxpayers. Scammers impersonate the IRS by phone or email, in person, or by mail or delivery service – and cost people their time and money. By staying vigilant against schemes and scams, taxpayers can protect themselves.

***Scammers can pose as the IRS by MAIL– taxpayers should know the facts: -NEWEST and more DEVIOUS schemes involves mail coming in a cardboard envelope from either a delivery service or the United States Postal Service (USPS). The enclosed letter includes the IRS masthead and wording that the notice is "in relation to your unclaimed refund." The contact information does not belong to the IRS, but the mailing looks official. This scheme seeks sensitive personal information from taxpayers – including driver’s license photos – that can be used by identity thieves to steal the taxpayer’s refund and other sensitive financial information.

***It's now easier to spot when it’s a scammer at the DOOR and not the IRS: -Scam artists may also appear at the door posing as IRS agents, creating confusion for not just the taxpayers but also local law enforcement agencies. As this scam has grown, taxpayer confusion about home visits by IRS revenue officers has increased.

(To help combat these scams, the IRS recently announced that it is ending most unannounced visits to taxpayers by agency revenue officers. In place of the unannounced visits, revenue officers will instead contact taxpayers through an appointment letter, known as a 725-B Letter, and schedule a follow-up meeting. This will help taxpayers feel more prepared when it is time to meet.)

*Taxpayers who receive a request from IRS in the mail or by phone can always contact IRS customer service to authenticate it.*

***Scammers may also contact taxpayers ELECTRONICALLY:
Taxpayers should be on the lookout for a summer surge of tax scams as identity thieves continue sending email and text messages promising tax refunds or offers to help 'fix' tax problems. They may pose as the IRS or tax professionals, urging the taxpayer to click fraudulent links so the identity thieves can steal valuable personal information.

Taxpayers should remember: the IRS NEVER, NEVER, NEVER initiates contact regarding a bill or tax refund by email, text or social media.

Before you call, see our online tools for self service. Customer service phone lines may be busy.

THIS JUST IN!

***BREAKING NEWS***

The Internal Revenue Service provided details today clarifying the federal tax status involving special payments made by 21 states in 2022.

The IRS has determined that in the interest of sound tax administration and other factors, taxpayers in many states will NOT need to report these payments on their 2022 tax returns.

THESE PAYMENTS FIT UNDER "GENERAL WELFARE AND DISASTER RELIEF PAYMENTS!

WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE LOOKED OUT FOR YOU, OUR LOYAL CLIENTS! 😉
PLEASE CONTINUE TO READ BELOW FOR FURTHER INFO.

During a review, the IRS determined it will NOT challenge the taxability of payments related to general welfare and disaster relief. This means that people in the following states DO NOT need to report these state payments on their 2022 tax return: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Alaska is in this group as well, but please see below for more nuanced information.

In addition, many people in Georgia, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Virginia also will not include state payments in income for federal tax purposes if they meet certain requirements. For these individuals, state payments will not be included for federal tax purposes if the payment is a refund of state taxes paid and either the recipient claimed the standard deduction or itemized their deductions but did not receive a tax benefit.

The IRS appreciates the patience of taxpayers, tax professionals, software companies and state tax administrators as the IRS and Treasury worked to resolve this unique and complex situation.

The IRS is aware of questions involving special tax refunds or payments made by certain states related to the pandemic and its associated consequences in 2022. A variety of state programs distributed these payments in 2022 and the rules surrounding their treatment for federal income tax purposes are complex. While in general payments made by states are includable in income for federal tax purposes, there are exceptions that would apply to many of the payments made by states in 2022.
