Accounting vs Bookkeeping: what is the difference?

Accounting focuses on more of the higher-level processing, it assess the financial health of the company, accountants usually assist with preparing budgets and annual tax returns. Accountants analyze data, bank records and other financial statements for you.

VS

Bookkeeping focuses more on clerical tasks and data entry, bookkeeping requires accuracy organization and strong math skills. Bookkeepers prepare financial statements for the accountant. Bookkeepers might also process payroll and send and record the vendor invoices.

Here's the top signs that YOU should hire a bookkeeper:

1) Your books are always outdated!
Look, we get it. In the busy times it can be hard to balance and keep track of your books. Let us do that leg work for you.

2) You don't have any time.
Being a business owner is stressful, and you aren't going to want to do your books in your downtime.

3) You only update your books before tax season.
It is important to keep your books up to date throughout the year to get an accurate snapshot of your finances.

4) You have unpredictable cash flow.
By keeping your books up to date, it can help you see where your money is coming from and when.

Here's some budgeting tips for small businesses:

Make a spreadsheet: Excel, Google Sheets or another program. Put in your major, or repeating expenses, as well as an estimated income.

Factor in some slack: in your spreadsheet, factor slack into that budget.

Look to cut costs: after tracking expenses and income, look to cut unnecessary costs in your business.

Review the business periodically: look at your business budgets often! Review them and see where they need to be changed. Where costs need to be cut, or the budget could be upped!

So... what is the difference?

To put it simply - a 1099 form is for a contractor (think freelance or self-employed person) vs a W-2 being for a standard employee.

A 1099 contracted employee is responsible for withholding their own taxes vs. a W-2 employee has their taxes withheld from their wages.

BOTH are tax forms, and both must be completed by January 31st of the following year.
