Whether college is still a distant milestone or the tuition bills are already landing, back-to-school season has a way of bringing that big expense into focus.

A 529 is one of the best tools for it. A few reasons why:

✅ Your money grows tax-free
✅ Qualified withdrawals for education are tax-free
✅ Many states offer a tax deduction just for contributing

Your money doesn't know where it came from. But your brain sure acts like it does.

Here's an experiment. You get a $1,000 tax refund and a $1,000 paycheck in the same week. Which one are you more tempted to "treat yourself" with?

Almost everyone says the refund.

But the money is identical. Your brain just filed it into two different folders based on where it came from.

That's mental accounting.

"Found" money gets the party. "Earned" money gets the vault.

Same dollars, same buying power, totally different rules.

It's not a character flaw. It's a quirk worth noticing, because the folders are made up.

Next windfall, try this: pretend it landed in your normal paycheck. Would you still spend it?
