Twenty years ago I started my business with a baby on my hip and a laptop balanced on the arm of the couch.
That's not an exaggeration, I worked during naptimes and after bedtime, in the little pockets of quiet I could find. I had small kids but still felt pulled to continue the career I had built in some way, but also knew that working 60 hour weeks and spending hours commuting wasn’t going to work for me and my family.
As a kid, I had seen my aunt have her own business as a bookkeeper working for local doctors’ offices. She was the one that initially introduced me to the world of accounting. I’m so grateful she did!
During my time in public accounting, I found I had a passion for helping small businesses with their accounting. When I left my full time job to have my son, I didn’t plan on starting a business, but when one side project turned into two, and I was able to continue to stay home with the kids, my business was born.
Some days that meant a couple hours of real work. Some days it meant fifteen minutes here and there before someone woke up crying. I took what I could get and I kept going. It started small, what people today would probably call a side hustle. But as my kids grew, so did my business. And my passion for helping small businesses hasn’t changed.
Twenty years later, my kids are grown (and off to college), and so is my business. What started as me, a laptop, and a handful of clients has turned into a real practice that has worked with around 250 clients over the years, several of them for more than 18 years and counting. Watching both of those things grow up at the same time, my kids and my business, has been the pride and joy of my life.
I didn't have a fancy plan when I started. I just knew I wanted to help people feel less scared of their own numbers, and I figured I'd work it out as I went, same as parenting. Turns out that's basically what happened.
So here's to twenty years, to all of the clients I have worked with over the years, to the ones who have stuck with me from nearly the beginning, to all of the friends I have made along the way, and to whatever the next twenty look like. 🥂
Thank you for being part of it!❤
