Last Friday we had the honor of sponsoring the Athens-Oconee CASA 5th Annual Gala and it was a night worth celebrating.

Athens-Oconee CASA is an organization under Children First, Inc. — a nonprofit dedicated to promoting safe homes for children in times of family crisis.

They advocate for over 300 foster care children in the Athens-Oconee community through the power of community volunteers.

That mission is one we are proud to stand behind.

We were invited by board member Pauline Anderson and we did not just show up — we showed out.

ATL CPA Group donated a Financial Freedom Package valued at $750 to the auction because we believe that financial empowerment is for everyone including the families and communities that organizations like CASA work so hard to protect.

Supporting our community is not separate from what we do. It is part of it.

Tax terminology should not feel like a foreign language.

So let us break down three terms every business owner needs to know.

1️⃣ Net Income.

This is the number the IRS actually cares about.

Not what came in — what was left after every expense was accounted for.

Your tax liability is built on this number so understanding it is non-negotiable.

2️⃣ Deductible vs. Nondeductible.

Every dollar you spend in your business is not automatically a deduction.

Deductible expenses are ordinary and necessary for running your business — software, supplies, business meals.

Nondeductible expenses are things the IRS does not allow for tax purposes like personal expenses or most entertainment costs.

Knowing the difference keeps you protected and maximizes what you can legally claim.

3️⃣ Depreciation.

When you make a big purchase for your business like equipment, a vehicle, or a computer the IRS typically does not let you deduct the full cost in one year.

Instead you recover that cost over time through annual deductions.

Under current law 100 percent bonus depreciation allows some assets to be fully expensed in the year of purchase — which is a significant opportunity for business owners who know about it.

These three concepts alone can change how you look at your finances and how you communicate with your CPA.
