Some of my clients stopped talking to their spouse about money years before they filed.

They tried. They brought up the credit card balance, the overdraft, the retirement account nobody checked. Each conversation ended with their spouse defensive or angry, and nobody ever talked about the original problem.

So they went quiet:

- Paying bills without mentioning the late fees
- Moving part of each paycheck into their own account
- Signing tax returns without reading them
- Letting their spouse handle the investments to avoid another fight

From the outside, the marriage looked calmer. Inside, one person had lost track of the family’s finances.

When divorce comes, the silence costs you. You walk into negotiations without knowing the mortgage balance, the value of the 401(k), or where the cash went.

If you’ve stopped asking about money at home, start gathering statements now: bank, credit card, retirement, and the last three years of tax returns. As a CDFA and co-mediator, I help you sort out what you own and owe before you sign anything.

Many of my clients separate months before either of them moves out. Few stretches of a divorce feel harder.

You’re grieving the marriage while you still split the mortgage, the electric bill, school pickups, and some nights the bedroom. A comment about the dishes turns into a fight about the last ten years.

Clients describe:

- Saying things they would never say to a friend or coworker
- Crying in the car after a five-minute talk about money
- Dreading the sound of the garage door

You don’t need a signed agreement or a new address before you start feeling steadier.

A few steps help right now:

- Write down what sets you off. Often the timing is the problem more than the topic (late at night, after the kids go to bed).
- Pick one time each week to talk about bills and logistics. Stick to the list.
- Put in writing who pays what until the divorce is final. Fewer surprises in the mail means fewer arguments.
- When your chest tightens, leave the room before you answer. Ten minutes is enough.

Your kids are watching how the two of you handle these months. Calm, predictable days at home matter more to them than the legal timeline.

If you’re living this now, send me a message. As a CDFA and co-mediator, I help couples set up a temporary financial plan so the household keeps running while you work out the rest.

You signed your prenup at 28.

Since then you've had kids, one of you stepped back from your career, you bought a house, and your financial picture looks completely different.

Does your agreement still reflect your life?

A postnuptial agreement lets couples update their financial understanding during the marriage β€” not just at the beginning. It's not a sign of trouble. It's a sign that you're paying attention.

If life has changed significantly since you got married β€” and honestly, when hasn't it β€” it might be worth a review.

If your family has money set aside for you in a trust β€” or you expect to inherit significant assets β€” please don't assume that automatically protects you in a divorce.

In many cases, it does offer some protection. But "some" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Inherited wealth, trust distributions, and family assets can become marital property depending on how they're handled, titled, or commingled during the marriage. I've seen it happen in situations where people were absolutely certain they were protected.

A prenup is the "belt and suspenders" approach β€” and for families with complex estate plans, it's often essential.

If you're engaged and your family has had the "trust reveal" conversation with you, the next step should be a conversation with a CDFA and a family law attorney.

Let's be honest: when you're going through a divorce, emotions are running high. And that's completely normal.

But here's what I've learned after years of working with people in your shoesβ€”when emotions are at their peak, that's exactly when you need someone thinking clearly about the numbers.

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, I'm not here to take sides. I'm here to help you see the full financial picture so you can make decisions you'll feel good about years from now.

✨ What does that look like?

- Understanding the tax impact of alimony and asset division
- Mapping out what your post-divorce budget will actually look like
- Creating a plan that sets you up for financial stability, not just survival

You're already dealing with enough stress. Let me handle the financial strategy, so you can focus on what matters most and move forward with confidence.

To the analysts and mediators who show up for families on their hardest days: thank you.

Swipe for an open letter to you.

You meet clients holding a folder of statements and a fear they struggle to name
You run the numbers twice
You stay calm when the room does not
You keep kids out of the middle

Clients forget the asset spreadsheet. They remember the call you returned within the hour and the tax bill you explained in plain words.

Tag an analyst or mediator you respect and say thank you today.
