2024 refund update **let me preface first by saying that I am NOT a state or IRS official - I simply want to pass on some information**
First, for the IRS - they started the filing system on January 29th this year which is easily a week later than normal. Yes they did accept some returns on the 25th but I suspect nothing was getting formally processed. The IRS refund date estimator shows that the first drop of refunds will be on February 9 (this Friday) but that is NEVER a guarantee - and that is only for those NOT claiming certain credits such as EIC - as has been law for several years now, those refunds have to wait til February 15 and usually don't show up until at least the 20th. Now for Maryland - not sure whose brilliant idea it was to do a system overhaul at the beginning of tax season but they did publically announce that it would be back up as of February 6 and we should see updates then - well that was yesterday and it seems no one's refund status was updated still. They have been accepting returns since January 25 as I do have acknowledgements but the where's my refund for the state shows not processed still. I *heard* yesterday that they were not even starting to process returns until February 6 meaning it would take a day or two to show as in process on the website - they did not share that tidbit in the press conference so I cannot speak to the validity but if true, they will be starting with a large backlog which could take longer to get going so maybe updates start showing up today with any luck but it could take longer. I wish had more concrete answers but this all the I have to work with at this point. If you have heard anything different please share with us and feel free to share this post!!

My mother and Denise's sister, Pat Parrott, passed away peacefully this morning. She is the rock that we built this business on - I learned so much from her. We will be closed today and tomorrow (February 16 & 17) - please say a prayer for my stepfather, Charlie, he is absolutely heartbroken.

Our Christmas trees are down and we are ready for the next season! We have gotten quite a few calls from people who have gotten their W2's already but most will not be out for a couple more weeks. The IRS has not officially announced when e-filing will be available - there is speculation that it will be around the 23rd though. I know many people want file as quickly as possible - just please make sure you truly have all your forms - there is nothing worse than filing your return on the 26th of January and then get another W2 on the 28th for a little job you completely forgot about - your refund could take 4-6 months to receive with an amendment!! Other important things to keep in mind - the "covid extras" have expired, so child tax credit, dependent care credit and EIC will be back to pre-pandemic amounts. The IRS has also again updated the withholding tables - and the forms are still crazy complicated - and still leaves many taxpayers not withholding enough if not handled properly. We are asking our clients to bring in current paystubs/pension statements when we do their taxes so we can help make any needed withholding changes. Thankfully the reporting from Venmo/Cash app and such was suspended for 2022 - however it will be an issue going forward - I will be posting more about this soon!! Lastly, we have moved just down the hall to an absolutely perfect and much larger downstairs space - I will have some pictures up soon as well as some details for a ribbon ✂️🎀🍾🎊!! We are very thankful for our fabulous clients - we realize not everyone loves coming in to see us (about as exciting as a trip to the dentist for many) but we are always happy to see all of you!! If you filed an extension for your personal income tax (1040), the filing deadline is October 17 - if you do not file by that date and owe tax, the penalties get very ugly so please do not wait! I will be expanding my listed office hours each week but I will stay later in the evenings or come in on weekends to accommodate clients schedules - this is why I limit the listed hours, so I can be flexible when needed. After a long couple weeks dealing with Covid, I will be back in the office on Tuesday and will be available by appointment all week. I will be working on getting back to everyone who left a message or text as well this week. I would also like to thank everyone for the well wishes and patience. During the summer, I am in the office on Tuesdays til 3 (except for July 5) and will happily meet by appointment on other days, evenings and weekends - I limit set office hours so i can be flexible throughout the week for our clients. Today - Monday April 18th - is the IRS tax due date - Maryland has extended the date for state returns to July 15th but the federal returns are due today. If you owe tax or think you might owe tax, it is of upmost importance to at least file your return today or get an extension - and technically, if you do owe anything, that payment is due today as well - it is an extension to file your return only, there is no extension for payment due... So if you file in October and owe tax, the will assess interest on that amount beginning April 18 and they could, but not always, also assess a failure to pay penalty - the bigger reason for an extension request is to avoid the failure to file penalty which can be up to 50% of taxes owed on top of interest accrued - this is a penalty they assess all the time! We will be in the office until at least 7pm - we are in the Hanson Street Professional Building @ 10 South Hanson (google maps often takes people to 10 North Hanson which is an apartment building). Just a reminder that today is not "tax day" - the IRS has extended til May 17 - but there is some exciting tax news for many Marylanders - the long awaited Maryland form 502LU that is needed if you had unemployment benefits is finally official - now it is just a matter of how quickly software developers will have it available and approved to efile with - fingers crossed that it is quick. There is also news dropping about IRS advance child tax credit payments coming this summer - there is actually more questions than answers in the information that has been released so far - I will update when a few things have been clarified.
