Watch for this Social Security scam!

An email from Social Security saying your latest statement is ready? You might want to think twice before clicking.

I received one of those emails this week. As you can see, it had a Social Security logo, looked reasonably official, and offered a link to preview and download my statement.

Except it wasn't from Social Security.

The link led to a page on an unrelated organization's website that attempted to download ScreenConnect, a legitimate remote-access program. In the wrong hands, that software can allow scammers to access your computer, files, and sensitive information.

I contacted the organization whose website was being used. They acknowledged the report and said they were investigating. The suspicious page has since become unavailable.

A few things worth knowing:
🔹 Social Security doesn't send monthly statements like the one described in the email.
🔹 You don't need to download special software to view your Social Security Statement.
🔹 An official-looking logo doesn't mean an email is legitimate.
🔹 You can check your statement directly through your account at ssa.gov.

Fraudsters are mailing letters that direct cryptocurrency holders to a bogus “Digital Asset Compliance Portal” that mimics IRS.gov to collect personal information and digital asset credentials.

Taxpayers affected by a fraud scheme should take several steps:

1. Stop communicating with the fraudster;
3. Change passwords for affected financial accounts;
3. Contact their financial institution or cryptocurrency exchange immediately if you shared credentials;
4. 5. Preserve screenshots, emails, and letters; and
Report information to IRS-CI at www.IRS.gov/SubmitATip.

July 30, 2026 — Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters to cryptocurrency holders in an attempt to steal personal information and digital assets.

As of 7/1/26, the standard mileage rate for business use of a vehicle is 76 cents per mile for the remainder of 2026.

The midyear change follows an increase in gasoline prices, according to the IRS. It is the first such midyear adjustment since 2022.
