Our third annual Carry Forward 5K lands on Halloween this year, so we're turning it into a family costume party with a finish line! 🎃

Saturday, October 31st at 9 AM at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. Walk, run, or scoot. Kids in costume go home with a treat bag. Grown-ups get coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts.

Last year our community raised over $3,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. This year we're aiming for $6,000 to support career counseling, mental health care, and long-term rehabilitation for injured veterans and their families, at no cost to them.

The 2027-2028 FAFSA is open as of October 1, 2026. If you or a student you support plans to attend college during the 2027–2028 academic year, it is a good idea to get started on the process early. So, with that in mind, our team wanted to share a few early steps that can help streamline the process:

🔹Create or verify your StudentAid.gov account.
🔹Gather essential financial documentation, including 2025 tax returns, W-2s, and income records.
🔹Determine which parent(s) or contributor(s) will be required to provide information, if necessary.
🔹Review college, state, and scholarship deadlines, as many institutions award aid on a first-come, first-served basis.

While the federal FAFSA deadline is June 30, 2028, many colleges and states set earlier priority deadlines for aid consideration, so submitting your application early can improve access to institutional, state, and need-based aid.

September is home to some truly remarkable moments in history. From breakthroughs in medicine to the furthest reaches of space, these are the kinds of milestones that remind us of what becomes possible when human ingenuity, courage, and determination come together.

Here are three we are celebrating this month:

🫀 September 2, 1952 - At the University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota surgical team (Drs. F. John Lewis, C. Walton Lillehei, Mansur Taufic, and Richard Varco) performed the first successful open-heart surgery using a technique called hypothermia, often called “code chill” or “code cool,” to temporarily stop the heart's blood flow.

🚀 September 5, 1977 - NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which has since become the most distant human-made object ever to travel through space. Onboard is the Golden Record, a carefully assembled message from Earth intended for any extraterrestrial life that may find it.

🏗️ September 30, 1935 - In the middle of the Great Depression, construction on the Hoover Dam commenced, a monumental feat of engineering that was finished two years ahead of schedule.
These moments continue to inspire us to think bigger, reach further, and never underestimate what is possible.
