Leaving the insurance model was supposed to bring your practice back to what medicine is supposed to feel like: real relationships, longer visits, care that isn't rationed by an insurer.

But a lot of DPC and concierge physicians tell me the business side snuck up on them. Membership revenue that's hard to track. Confusion about what to actually pay yourself. Worry about keeping patient data HIPAA-safe in a bookkeeping system that wasn't built for healthcare.

I wrote up the seven financial blind spots I see most often in DPC practices, and how to fix each one before it becomes a bigger problem: https://reconciledsolutions.net/7-financial-blind-spots-quietly-undermining-your-dpc-practice/

If you're building a DPC or concierge practice (or know someone who is), this is worth the read.

What part of running the business side has surprised you most?

Nobody warned you that opening a DPC practice came with a second full-time identity: accidental entrepreneur.

You trained for medicine. Then suddenly you were choosing legal entities, untangling membership revenue, and trying to figure out what to pay yourself. None of that was in residency.

That's exactly why I'm teaming up with healthcare attorney Stephanie Posey and DPC branding specialist Trina Fisher for a live webinar: From Startup to Grown Up: The Legal, Financial, and Branding Foundations of a Thriving DPC Practice.

One session, three foundations:
Legal guardrails that protect your mission and set you up to grow.
Financial confidence: clean books, the right chart of accounts, KPIs that tell your practice's real story, and how to pay yourself without guessing.
A brand that owns your corner of the market and reflects the humanity you brought back to medicine.

If you know a physician building a DPC or concierge practice, send this their way. This is the stuff nobody teaches in med school.

What part of the business side caught you most off guard?

This is what "work hard, play hard" looks like when it's real. ❤️

Our India team got together for a special outing: great food, an afternoon of games, and dance videos that genuinely made me laugh out loud. (The choreography! The costume changes! I fear I'm employing future TikTok stars.)

The reason was bittersweet. The team gathered to celebrate Sanjay, who is heading off to his next chapter after years of guidance, support, and the kind of leadership that makes everyone around him better. Reading the thank-you messages the team wrote for him had me smiling at my desk half a world away. Sanjay, thank you for everything. You will be so missed.

Work hard, play hard is one of our five Immutable Laws at Reconciled Solutions, right alongside nice people only. Days like this are why.

What's the best team celebration you've ever been part of? 🎉

A client once told me she logged into QuickBooks Online to record one customer payment.

Two hours later, she was still in there. Invoices. Uncategorized transactions. A pending estimate. The whole tour.

Here's what I told her: this is not a discipline problem. It's a setup problem. QuickBooks Online was built to do most of that work for you, and almost nobody turns the automation on.

Bank feeds import your transactions so you review instead of type. Bank Rules categorize the regulars. The mobile app files receipts the second you snap them. Recurring transactions handle rent and subscriptions without you.

One afternoon of setup. Hours back, every single month.

Complexity fails. Simplicity scales. And your bookkeeping is the first place that shows.

I wrote up the full setup walkthrough here: https://loom.ly/iWBSyO8

What's the task that swallows your time every time you open your books?

QuickBooks Online has automation built in that could cut your bookkeeping time by half if you used all the tools available.

Twenty years in, and I'm more excited about what's coming than I am nostalgic about what's been.

Because here's what I know:

The small business owners I work with are running some of the most important practices and firms in their industries. DPC physicians building patient-centered care without the noise of insurance. IT firms protecting infrastructure that keeps businesses running. Law practices and mental health practices and service companies that are doing genuinely good work.

They deserve financial systems that work as hard as they do.

That's been the mission since 2006. It's the mission now.

If you're a service-based business owner who's ready to stop guessing and start actually understanding your numbers, let's talk: https://loom.ly/_kB6RwI

We're halfway through 2026.

Time for the question I ask every client around this point in the year, and the one I'm asking myself:

Is your business simpler or more complicated than it was in January?

Most owners answer "more complicated" without even thinking about it. New tools. New hires. New offers. New systems layered on top of old ones that never got cleaned up. A pricing structure that's grown three new exceptions since spring.

Complexity doesn't usually arrive all at once. It accumulates — one reasonable decision at a time — until you're running a business that's harder to operate than the one you started.

That's the whole idea behind our theme this year: Simplicity scales. Complexity fails.

Not because complexity is always wrong. Sometimes growth requires it. But complexity without intention is just drag. It's the thing quietly making everything slower, harder to hand off, and more expensive to run than it needs to be.

So here's the mid-year audit I'd actually recommend:

What in your business got more complicated in the last six months — and did it need to?
What's one thing you could simplify before year-end that would make the next six months easier?
Where are you the bottleneck because something was never built to run without you?

You don't need a bigger business in the second half of the year. You need a clearer one.

Six months left. What are you simplifying?

Twenty years of Reconciled Solutions isn't really a story about bookkeeping.

It's a story about people.

The clients who trusted us with the financial side of the thing they built. The team members who showed up every month and made sure the numbers were right. The referral partners who said, "you should really talk to Angie." The mentors who pushed back when I needed it. The peer group members who kept me honest.

You don't build 20 years of anything alone.

One of our guiding principles at Reconciled Solutions has always been this: heart of a teacher. We don't just process transactions. We help owners understand what's happening in their business, and why it matters.

That comes from the people who've been generous enough to teach me over these two decades.

To everyone who came to celebrate with us last week, and to everyone who's been part of this story: I see you. I'm grateful. Thank you!

Today is National Take Your Dog to Work Day.

Patriot has been unimpressed by this holiday for years.

Every day is Take Your Dog to Work Day when your office is wherever your laptop is.

He has attended approximately 1,000 client calls, reviewed zero balance sheets, and perfected the art of looking busy while doing absolutely nothing.

Honestly? Aspirational energy for a Friday.

The real perk of building a business on your own terms isn't the flexibility to bring your dog to work.

It's that the lines between "work life" and "real life" stop being so hard.

Patriot doesn't know what a commute is. Neither do I, most days.

That's not an accident. That's a design choice.

Happy Take Your Dog to Work Day from the only coworker who has never once questioned my decisions. 🐾

A business that can only survive by underpaying its founder isn't a sustainable business. It's a job with extra steps and all the risk.

You built this. You deserve to be compensated for it.

What would it mean for your business if you stopped being the last one paid?
