“Do I have to die for my life insurance to be worth anything?”

This is a question I get a lot. And it’s an important one.

Short answer: no. Some policies come with living benefits — money you can use while you’re still here, like if a serious illness hits and care gets expensive.

Today is National Senior Citizens Day — a phrase not one of my clients would use to describe themselves.

And they'd be right. The people I work with are traveling, starting businesses, chasing grandkids, and learning to surf. Running circles around folks half their age.

So instead of “senior citizens,” let's just call it what it is: the people who put in the work and earned the good part.

Proud dad post. You've been warned.

This month, V and I sent all four of ours off to college — the triplets, and our youngest, who had the audacity to turn 18 on us.

Watching them pack up and head out to start their own stories — that's the whole point, isn't it? Eighteen-plus years of practices, projects, and Sunday dinners, and now the world gets them.

Go get 'em, kids. We could not be prouder.

And to everyone in this community who helped us raise this crew — the coaches, the teachers, the neighbors who fed them (a lot) — thank you. It took all of Encinitas.

Today is National Lazy Day. Finally, a holiday I can get behind.

Here's the thing, though — the best lazy days are the ones you can actually afford to take. No emails. No math running in the background. No little voice asking if you're going to be okay.

That's kind of the whole point of a retirement income plan: earning the right to do absolutely nothing, guilt-free.

So go ahead. Nap. Hammock. Do nothing beautifully. You've got my blessing.
