The average small business owner spends hours every month on payroll. Here's what our clients do with that time instead:

Hour 1: Actually taking lunch
Hour 2: Training the new hire
Hour 3: That marketing idea you keep putting off
Hour 4: Leaving on time. Imagine that.

Payroll, handled. By people who know your business, your name, and your community.

You didn't start your business to become a payroll expert. That's our job. Local service, national resources, and a team that picks up the phone.

Ready to take payroll off your plate? Request a payroll checkup from your local Payroll Vault office. The consultation is free, and so is the peace of mind.

August is National Wellness Month, and we'd like to talk about a stressor nobody puts on their wellness list: Payroll.

For business owners, payroll anxiety is real. Am I withholding correctly? Did that filing go through? What if I made a mistake?

And it matters for your team too. An accurate paycheck that arrives on time, every time, is one of the most fundamental ways a business supports employee wellbeing. Financial stress follows people home. Reliable pay helps keep it from starting at work.

Wellness isn't just yoga and water reminders. Sometimes it's knowing an expert has the details covered so you can actually be present, at work and at home.

Give yourself one less thing to carry this month. Connect with your local Payroll Vault team and see what handled payroll feels like.

Not all payroll providers are the same. The differences aren't always obvious until something goes wrong.

Here's what you should be able to expect from whoever handles your payroll:
ACCURACY. Every payroll run processed correctly, on time, every time.
COMPLIANCE SUPPORT. Proactive guidance on tax law changes, filing deadlines, and workforce regulations, not just reactive fixes.
REAL COMMUNICATION. A person who knows your account and picks up the phone when you call.
LOCAL EXPERTISE. Understanding of your state and local requirements, not just federal defaults.
PROACTIVE SERVICE. Alerts, reminders, and guidance before issues become problems.

If any of those feel unfamiliar, it might be time to raise the bar. Contact Payroll Vault and see what a better payroll experience looks like.

Summer staffing can change quickly.

Seasonal employees may be returning to school. Temporary positions may be ending. Work hours may be shifting as customer demand changes.

Those adjustments can affect much more than the schedule.

Business owners may also need to review:
• Final pay requirements
• Employee classifications
• Overtime calculations
• Changes in recurring deductions
• Accrued paid time off
• Access to payroll and timekeeping systems
• Records that must be retained after an employee leaves

The employee may be seasonal.

The employer’s payroll responsibilities are not.

A thoughtful offboarding and payroll process helps protect the business while also making sure employees are treated accurately, professionally, and on time.

Payroll is ultimately about people.

When workforce changes are managed well, employees leave with confidence, records remain organized, and business owners can stay focused on running the company.

With the third quarter underway, business owners have enough payroll activity behind them to spot patterns, catch inconsistencies, and make corrections before year-end gets closer.

A few questions to consider:
• Are employee wages, deductions, and benefits accurate?
• Have recent hires, departures, raises, or bonuses been processed correctly?
• Are payroll tax filings and deposits current?
• Have business changes been communicated to your payroll provider?

A mid-quarter review can help uncover outdated information, correct discrepancies, and reduce the likelihood of unpleasant surprises later.

A payroll setup can feel simple on the outside and still leave an owner with very little visibility into costs, services, and choices.

That is a problem.

Small business owners deserve to understand what they are paying for, what they are actually using, and what options they have.

Your business is unique to your market. Your organization is staffed distinctively different to suite your business needs. So, why would you be expected to settle for a one-size-fits-all HR/Payroll bundle? You don’t have to. FAQ OF THE MONTH: "Can I switch payroll providers in the middle of the year?"

Short answer: yes. And more business owners do it than you'd think.

The timing concern is understandable. Mid-year means active payroll runs, year-to-date records in motion, and tax filings already in progress. But those aren't reasons to stay with a provider that isn't working for you. They're just details a good transition handles correctly.

Here's what a smooth mid-year switch actually looks like:
Your new provider collects your YTD payroll history
Prior records are reconciled so nothing falls through the cracks
Tax filings continue without interruption
You stop dealing with whatever was frustrating you before

The right time to switch is when you're ready. Not when the calendar says so.

Some small business owners choose bundled payroll and HR support because it sounds easy. Sometimes it is.

But sometimes the package includes services the business barely uses—or does not use at all.

If you cannot clearly explain what you are paying for, it may be time to ask whether the package really fits your business.

I wrote this article to help business owners ask the right questions when they ‘buy a bundle’ of services.

Click here to read the article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/when-hands-off-payroll-comes-hidden-tradeoffs-melissa-clary-l5i7e/

Please share with a colleague or friend who purchased a bundled HR/payroll package. I’m happy to review their services to ensure they’re paying for what they need and use.

The goal is not more services.

Summer hiring looks easy until it isn't.

Seasonal employees, part-time schedules, tipped workers, minors with work permits, and fluctuating hours all come with payroll requirements that catch business owners off guard every year.

A few things worth getting right before they become a problem:
Proper classification for seasonal and part-time staff
Correct withholding for tipped employees
Compliance with minor labor laws if you're hiring students
Accurate tracking for variable-hour workers

Summer moves fast. Your payroll setup should be ready before the rush, not during it.

Talk to your local Payroll Vault office about getting your summer payroll dialed in.
